Same here . . .composite direct from the LD player generally works out. My UHDTV even had a 'Laserdisc Player' input label, which I thought both odd and cool.

That really does surprise me, what brand and how old is it? Last time i ever saw this was on the rear panels of Pioneers top end AVRs up to around the mid 2000s.

It's a TCL Roku model from 2018, nothing fancy - but I need to clarify. The physical inputs aren't labeled but the Smart TV 'main menu' had 'Laserdisc Player' preprogrammed in - I simply selected it for the composite.

I then put that input in 'cinema mode', dialed the sharpness way back and using the Zoom setting I'm quite happy with the look of letterbox LDs. Maybe someday I'll try out a dedicated video processor but I'm not convinced I'd notice much difference . . .

Yes in an ideal world it would be good if you could maybe just loan one first to satisfy your curiosity before committing to a full purchase!

I have been playing with my laserdisc players and scalers this easter, and like to know if any of you guys with the ADV7842 evaluation board has compared it to any of the ADV7850 based Denon or Marantz AVRs, the ADV7842 and ADV7850 uses the same analog section, the difference being that we cant adjust other than sharpness and noise reduction in the AVR, question is how good is the standard video setup in the AVR with the ADV7850 chipset.

Personally i have replaced my Crystalio and lumagen 2041 setup, and found the AVR doing a beter job, it never really trips like the crystalio.

I normally use a MSB LS2Gold player, and sometimes a Pioneer CLD2950, find the Pioneer slightly more detailed, but also more noisy, the MSB is a bit to the soft side, and often more visible edge ringing. Also just done the pin 71 mod on a Pioneer CLD925, great mod but still to much noise, anyone who have suggestions how to bypass more of the CLD925 videochain?

Can try pin 79 of IC500. Not sure if it has sync in it though.

Personally, before diving into video processing min/maxing I would make sure the player has near zero crosstalk using a GGV reference disc.

What do pin 79 do, and what pattern on the GGV disc, cant find much info about it. only have a GGV pal disc

Pin 79 is VOUT. You can see if directly tapping it will work. Someone did something similar here: CLD-D606 and Video Essentials

I'm not familiar with PAL GGV but look for the vertical bar screen. There are several on NTSC GGV with 115 and 475 being most notable.

Take frame 115 for example. Black bar in center. On frame 114 the black bar is on the left, and on frame 116 the black bar is on the right. When you look at 115, you are looking for bleed-through (crosstalk) from adjacent frames 114, 116.

Thanks think i got it, they are on frame19224 19225 19226 on the pal disc, guess i should bring up the brightness to make sure im not clipping crosstalk.

Yeah you want to make you display as noisy as possible when performing this check.

Thanks a lot, got it, i have some noise that looks a bit like roling scanlines going on, any idea what thats about? The crosstalk adjustment cleaned up the image some, will try this on my 2950 and MSB player as well

Tested the video board in a different 925, and the pin 71 mod seems to introduce some unwanted effects, and i also recap the ps, thats also a no go. Conclusion is that the 925 in general is a crap player, have a old Denon LA2300 that is better, in the end ill likely use the CLD2950 if i can get a coax spdif on it for DTS and AC3 out.

Did the crosstalk test on the 2nd 925, it has a bit, but its on both sides, cant be removed, was the same on both 2925, both the LA2300 and CLD2950 tested perfect, and with much less noise, need to find a NTSC edition of the GGV disc, so i can play with the MSB (panasonic LX-H680) it has all the features needed and is super quiet, just look like it has to much noise reduction and some sharpness at the same time in the video line.

Do you mean both sides as side A and B or both sides of the vertical bar?

Both side of the vertical bar, its very faint, hard to see, but i could not get it totally away on any of the 925, have a 3rd one ill test soon, can it be laser focus or gain related, or is it just the laser in the 925?

You need to check vertical bar on both Side A and Side B since they have different adjustments.

When the crosstalk is evenly distributed on both sides of bar, you can adjust tangential to clean that up.

Any particular reason you are taking shots at me?

Also for OP and anyone the current trick is to make up some letterhead and claim to be an HDMI adopter, send to Digikey and they accept. I haven't done this and I don't necessarily agree but it has worked for others.

No, not really taking shots. Are you bleeding? Sorry Pete. I thought you had a better sense of humor. You seem to use it on other people so I thought I'd just do as you do. Apologies if you were offended ;)
