I taking another trip and this time I 'm making sure I get my laserdiscs so I can have more options than what I currently have on hand. It all has to come home anyway. I am worried after 4 years in storage they won't play. As they are in Eurolite cases and are at the back of the storage unit so I am excited to get them out of there. hopefully the glue and discs are ok with nothing melted. But can the discs actually melt?

They never melt unless super heated. LD plastic is super stable.

I didn’t realize you meant no AC. If there was a lot of temp changes, particularly in the higher range, that could be very bad.

I think they will be fine.
Everything can melt with the right amount of heat.

The thing that may have a slight issue would be any VHDs but again these things were shipped at all types of temps back in the day.
Also you had them in cases which means they were pressed together with other stuff and should be fine.

But keep us posted, would like to know.
I know cold doesn't do s**t to them, had them in a container when we did our last move and it was in the middle of winter FREEZING....

# store in cool dry place is on packaging for a reason.
If you live in Arizona and have storage with no A/C then prepare a dumpster.

Today as of this posting my brother stated it hit 117 degrees F.
Very problematic for all those poorly stored laserdiscs in the valley of the sun.

Let us know how your stuff plays ....

cheers to the membership !

I think I've changed my plans and will put them in the back seat so at least it will be cool on the way to its new home. I will keep everyone posted though I might not spin Eva or Nadia since I have multiple of those on various formats.

What temperature would you say is maximum to store discs? Obviously there’s no exact data on this but those who live in non climate controlled houses, how have your discs fared over the years and have you noticed any rot or other issues develop? My discs a stored in a room with maximum temperature of 28C (82 F) over summertime and wonder if this is slightly too warm for storage.

The closer to room temp the better. 82 is kinda high but probably not an issue. I’m sure there is some published temp range somewhere. IMHO, storing them vertical and slightly tight is the most important thing. Humidity second, then the heat.

Well it'd better not be, because my apartment can go up to 86 during summer.

Yeah I was going to say, our old house was at 85 or slightly hotter in summer before we got the second window unit
and no issues.

I know our sunroom gets to about 100, I don't store anything of value that I know can't stand the heat but its all good
as its only a short period of time in a day and not constant like an oven.

Christmas plastic stuff has been fine for 3 years now with no deformations.

Read somewhere that 10C is ideal storage temperature. That’s pretty unrealistic though

So wait, you guys have single payer healthcare but no air conditioning? That’s impressive. If my house hit 86 I’d probably...end up in the hospital. I hate heat and cannot stand it.

Air conditioning is pretty much the number one thing you need to archive anything, LDs, stamps, comics, quilts, guitars, anything. AC not only controls temp but also humidity.

It’s so fun to play your LDs after a long downtime. I’ve been through this sort of thing many times. I’m sort of doing it right now since my XBR960 finally popped. A fix is on the way.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure summers back when I was a child were never this hot. Then again, I also lived in a house in the country surrounded by trees, not in a concrete block with no shade whatsoever.

Putting one in my freezer right now, will tell you after a few days.

I doubt anything will happen, and I will need for it to get to room temp before I try it in my player
if no warping occurs.
