40 years in Japan!

Just remembered yesterday (when I sold my Elton John: In Central Park (1980) (Uncut) [MP026-25DO]) that the first round of commercial Pioneer LD releases in Japan happened on October 9th, 1981.

Even Pioneer acknowledged this:

One week to go but, amazingly, except for an an Analog-CX soundtrack a little harsh when the microphones saturate, it is still playing fine with no laser rot!!

Good luck playing VHS tapes or even DVDs 40 years after their relesases.
I'm not even mentioning HD DVD (for obvious reasons).
If we have the birth date, we also know the retirement date: January 14th, 2009

お誕生日おめでとう、レーザーディスク!

Julien

It looks like a Karaoke disc, similar to TOEI Karaoke Video Disc: vol.E7 (1985) [TE-W307].

'fraid not. Pioneer Japan disks up until 1984-1985 are a crapshoot, they were great when new but the glues weren't stable long-term.

My Elton John Central Park played just fine after 40 years.

But maybe not all pressings were that lucky.

Really? I've got about 12 or so from that time period made by Pioneer Japan and all play fine, one I know back in the day I picked up
a copy and side 2 was bad but the second copy I bought sealed was fine.

Other about 11 pieces I have never needed any replacements and I still own them.

I remember reading the articles on Blam's Discovision site that Pioneer Japan had much better manufacturing standards than MCA did back in the day and featured far less defective discs. Then again, those same articles say that MCA's defect rate was 90%! So "far less" than 90% could still be like 20% defect rate. And that's still a good chunk of discs.

I have a single Pioneer Japan manufactured disc from 1982 and it plays perfect to this day!
