I was just watching Gate to the Mind's Eye, The (1994) [ID4068MM] and when I reached the 40k range the disc started glitching and skipping back to earlier frames. At first I thought it was the player acting up so I tried another CAV disc which I knew has worked in the past and it played without a hitch so at least now I know it's the disc's fault.

Is this the dreaded laserlock?

More than likely a warp in the disc.

It doesn't seem physically warped but I guess I'll have to look into some way of flattening it.

Yeah, could be or something microscopic that you can't see.

Have this with one disc, I remember sort of botching it.
Played fine and then one day it didn't, thought it was a small scuff on the edge but I cleaned it and it got worse.
But plays in another player of mine, so I thought I would adjust the laser, well it worked on that disc but started to skip others
so I put the adjustments back and just watch that one disc on my other players.

Also had a warped disc once and it did get better over time on that slight end but haven't tested it since, may try it again later today.

I finally got around to flattening this, along with another disc I got that displays similar symptoms...and despite keeping them that way for three whole days, I'm seeing pretty much no improvement.

Am I supposed to flip them too while flattening them or are these discs just junk?

To flatten a warp disc I put it under 2 dozens of other LDs for one week.
Then flip it and flatten it the other way for another week.

I saved a few unplayable LDs in the past (past the 40mn mark).

HLD-X9 was a LOT more sensitive to warp than the LD-S9.

Wanna know something? I recently got "The Prince and the Pauper" (PILA-1349), and during the ending scene of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" it started experience laser rot. Just after "The End" card faded out, it began skipping back to the scene with Ichabod's encounter with the Headless Horseman. I should know because it does have a tiny scratch. I mean, it IS a Pioneer Japan disc, nearly all of them aren't prone to skipping, in my opinion.

So does it have a scratch that's making it bounce back, or is it rot or is it warped? Or is it because its Pioneer Japan.

Maybe the scratch part, and/or they played the "Sleepy Hollow" part a few too many times.

Oh and the laser burnt a mark into the inner layer
