Post subject:  War and Peace (1966) [PILF-2671] - No information anywhere?

LaserDisc forum users,

The only information about the titled release is on War and Peace (1966) [PILF-2671]. I have tried my best to find anywhere else with more details about this release, maybe even a copy for sale, to absolutely no avail. Not on any Japanese search engine or marketplace, no amount of reverse image searches bring up the cover anywhere other than lddb.com.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is there any evidence of the existence of this LaserDisc anywhere other than lddb.com?

Many thanks

It was added by a member who still posts so I’d say it’s real. The logo in the pic is the “new” Pioneer logo so that jives. It probably wasn’t a huge seller since it was late and expensive.

In truth there are many many LDs that are hard to find any info on or even a single pic. The internet became popular about the time LD died and Japan was even later catching on to web. It’s not like today when as soon as a product is released there are 10,000 identical pictures of it all over Twitter.

EDIT: I have Araiguma Rascal: Memorial Box [PILA-1450] which was released from Pioneer around the same time and also $$$. I have the only copy I’ve ever seen or even seen a picture of. Nobody on LDDB has one except me and a copy has never been sold here…which means I’m obligated to add to that entry, sorry everyone. I’ll get to it. :)

Takes about 5 seconds to find one on eBay :-)

=> https://www.ebay.com/itm/195014261714

But it seems to be only one disc from the boxset, not the complete set.

Wow, only one disc from the whole set and they still want 150 dollars for it!

Ebay prices really are a total joke.

I'm disappointed that it's not only missing almost all the discs but the listing doesn't say L@@K! Rare!

Is there something about this particular Laserdisc that is worth buying over the Blu Ray?

No, and on top of that, it's entirely in Russian with Japanese subtitles, so unless you understand either one of those, it won't do you much good.

Better off with the Blu Ray then unless you speak/read/write Russian and/or Japanese.

Speaking of which, you wouldn't be able to hook me up with one of the dual region copies? Criterion changed them mid-production and I ended up with one of the A only ones :?

There are SO MANY euro movies that exist as Japanese LD with amazing covers but sadly no translation other than Japanese. Usually I stick with Criterion or Cinemadisc for this reason. Japanese subtitles tend to be extremely minimal so even if you can read them they probably aren’t much more help than knowing another of the Romance languages well.

Russian… just take my chances with, no subs or any kind on the two Russian DVDs I have, ACCA and 2ACCA2.

Since installing a modchip I worry not about these so called 'blu ray regions' that you speak of. As the Black Knight would say, a region lock 'tis but a flesh wound. I fart in it's general direction. It's mother, DVD region locking, was a hamster and it's father smelled of elderberries!!!

I imported a US player so I could watch region A discs.

It failed in less than a year and I couldn't afford to send it back for warranty :(

Not related....
Apologies !
Picked up Tolstoy's "War and Peace" this past year. (Novel)
I found it a very difficult read. Perhaps the translation was wanting.
This thread gives me the encouragement to pick it up again.

I think Tolstoy's works, similar to Dostoyevski's, were originally serialized in a paper and they were paid by page, which is why they're so incredibly long and padded out.

I did a lot of research before I bought a copy but haven't read it yet, was told that the best or better translation was done by
Constance Garnett.

This is also the case with Don Quixote but the version I read was by a supposedly mid range translator and I was fine with it.

That's terrible, what player was it? Was it a voltage issue? You know what those crazy Americans are like with their ancient 110 volts and NTSC televisions (the less said about SECAM though the better)!!!

Definitely go for a modchip if you can. It's a pain in the hole to install, but an oaf like me managed it so it can't be that bad to do. Once in though it's a delight not to have to think about Blu Ray region locks now. You can get by most of the time with the top menu trick and no modchip required. But some stuff is hard locked and the only way then is either dump it to a NAS or other kind of drive or get a modchip in your player.

Well worth it if you can.

Nah, more like just garbage quality control. It worked fine the time it did, but after about 8 months or so it started having trouble reading discs and then it started just randomly powering itself down and making a clicking noise.

I never had much of an opinion on translations until I read The Little Prince. Then I got real opinionated about it. The Little Prince though is almost poetry, the word craft is carefully done, it pulls your heart strings like mad. When you’re dealing with an epic I think it’s less important. There’s only so many ways to say, “Alexi moved to the country.”

Technically speaking it's four different movies, so saying it's eight hours long is like saying Lord of the Rings is 12 hours.
