You’re not being honest. You’re not telling people to be respectful, you’re telling them to shut up…respectfully…which is impossible so get used to pissing people off the more you do it.

We didn’t “bring” anything, the speculators do. You’re telling us that instead of driving them away we should just love every s****y thing about them. I reject it.

“Why the hate guys?” This is a lie of a question and it makes me sick. It’s what a high school football player says after he shoves some kid into a locker. To pretend you don’t see other peoples concerns because you would rather there is no conflict or unpleasantness. You probably wonder why people don’t like cops or bankers. (Hint: they are murderers and thieves).

Not everyone is on the same drugs or wants to be. I can’t ignore the things you do and I wouldn’t want to be such a hollow vessel anyway, no matter how much it drives me crazy. I suppose I’ll stop caring some day but it won’t be any time soon.

Next time, beat us to the punch. Ask these people, “Hey man, why ya gotta bring your doomed capitalistic plans into our place of decent discussion? You’re never going to make a dime of that pile of movies so let’s watch them, eh?” Tell them to talk about actual film, or video quality or surround sound or artistic merit or lack of artistic merit or what they bought today. That way they’ll already be reprogrammed when Rein-O and I wake up and read the forum.

@firehorse

I'm not discarding manners: I'm calling BS on shielding criticism of speculative investment with the excuse of manners. I'm not calling for ad-hominem attacks or throwing any pitches outside the strike zone. And here's the strike zone: speculation isn't behavior to respect. I can't stop anyone from speculating on laserdiscs, video games, sports memorabilia, or what have you, but I have no qualms with responding to a question of "Which of these is the best investment?" with "Go invest in something else. This behavior ruins hobbies."

Tl;dr: The best response to speculation on other people's hobbies isn't "To each his own" out of an overextended conception of decorum. The best response is "Stop." Measured, reasonable contempt for a specific behavior.

(And since Zeta brought up the political dimension, I'll say that I think capitalism is the best known engine for material prosperity at a societal level, but that internalizing capitalism as an ideal to bring to all aspects of life, like the humanities and hobbies, is a sickness of the soul and should be discouraged.)

Do I hear my name

I think this topic has gone over my head and I don't get it.
If someone wants to spend money good, someone makes out and both are happy.

If the market for whatever, house, car, LD etc. is low then someone makes out and is happy the other person is SOL with less money
in their pocket and out the thing.

Just be grateful we are talking about a stupid priced laserdisc and not how we are 83 and having to sell our house to pay for medical bills
and keep up with the economy..........

@rcarlson

You infer I am shielding speculative practice with an excuse for utilizing manners.
While claiming your not disregarding manners.

Hmmmm...
Agreed your not doing anything that you mentioned outside the throw zone.
Your manners seem moderately fair.
Manners dictate that one not say / type unkind things, even if true.
I really don't know what your beef is about my posts man.
Having moderate restraint and respect should be a no brainer here at the forum.
Unlike zeta posted, I am NOT telling anyone to shut up or wonder about hate.
Never mentioned hate in my posts this thread.

I shield nothing as you infer sir.
I simply requested a level of decorum at a base level to avoid disparaging or derogatory treatment of members here.

If you have a high horse crusade to wipe out speculation have at it.... Its still a free country.
A point of order though. Query why would you care or consider if others behavior is "wrecking hobbies" ?
Are others directly wrecking your hobbies ? Curious.
That implies giving way too much power to other people to me.

Please do not twist my post as I just noticed Zeta has done.
Man, talking about an axe to grind......
May or may not address his tripe. I am at work and at the mercy of patient loads....

I stand by everything I typed and do thank you for your rebuttle.

In regard to capitalism being an engine....
We have never had true laissez-faire capitalism in our country.
We have capitalism with many controls.
So technically the jury is out because we just don't know.
One can speculate, or maybe I should say infer.... if true capitalism is the best way to go.
I would like to find out if true capitalism is the way to go, however with the current status of robber barons running amok, I will most likely leave this blue earth way before any attempt is made.

With respect, cheers to the membership....

@ signofzeta

Knew you would not resist for long mate. The king of good manners.

Your inferences are, as usual, beyond the pale.

Man you must be one bitter and cynical man... what happened that drove you to it ?
You know nothing about me, nothing. I don't know anything about you, except we both grew up in Michigan and know where the Center for Creative Studies is by the DIA in Detroit.

Man just as I get a touch of respect for you, as I like your posts, mostly.
But when you miss the mark, you miss big.
Perhaps a English class at local community College zeta.
You have prowess, I can read it.

Try being friendly, it will change your life.
Surprised that more people have not left the LDDB Forum based on your disparaging remarks alone brother.
You do not mind ruffling feathers, that is your MO.

Sad regards

This is utter word-salad. The only thing that comes through intelligibly is your condescending tone. I think I'm done talking to you.

Wow, you did not even acknowledge my take on capitalism.
Geez man.... with respect, how can one have a condescending tone while typing ?
Jaded any man ?

Oh, just edited some, it did seem a bit jumbled.
If you care to, re read, if not aloha and mahalo

wow, i don't know how come my messages turn a ripple wave in discussion.
i just read an article said iphone1 , unsealed, was sold at least US$50000. i think a decade ago, most people will said u better buy stocks or property etc. so, there is definately some people will disagree that as investment, which is good; because if all people sees opportunity, there will no skyrocket price in an old piece of iphone.

we have to filter and forget people comments in forum; we all not know each other, so actually i assume all messages are written from the mind without the need of politeness. so guys, both don't need to take that seriously..
my story is, i accidentally got 700 units of laserdisc with a very low price (US$80). but i don't have enough storage area for holding them in years , so i need to sell most of them in very short period of time to cover my initial breakeven cost; and store around 10 units of laserdisc for long term, as investment.

therefore it is very helpful to read some of your articles , learning which disc is worth to store. i will leave matrix, Jurassic park, and a few laserdiscs at my home, and sold the rest quickly.
hobby and investment are related. hockey cards, comic books, etc, are all with a value in some rare items

Please accept humble apologies for my countrymen.
It appears the suggestion of treating people with a modicum of respect has spawned great angst.
Sadly, a common theme in the states currently.
This to shall pass.....
Good health and good fortune sir

Cheers

I think a lot of these prices are boosted due to crypto, nostalgia and mad money floating around for some.
I doubt it would be a good investment to buy a phone for 40K to hope it goes up, or that you can make a profit in 5-15 years, but then
again I wouldn't be shocked.

I just see that living in Hades with nothing around and people are desperate to pay minimum 2k a month in rent and can't afford to buy
a house, that's not going down anytime soon.

The 50K phone is cool stuff for cool people, like NTFs. I doubt you can sell that at your yardsale for 50K and when electricity goes down
you will be SOL on that investment.

Wow Tokyo Raiders is such a mediocre film. Some good 2K Tokyo architecture and interiors but apart from that a completely forgettable film.

Agreed...
However the very last LaserDisc issued in Japan EVER....
Gives a tad of significance on that score imo.

Because I think most of us are smart enough to recognize a fraud when they see it. If somebody pays fifty grand for an unopened iphone one, or two million dollars for a sealed Super Mario 64, that sh!t should be raising some red flags.

Do you know what a pump and dump scheme is?

Sorry to interrupt the political discussion.

I personally would love to own.
Incredible stretch of land which has changed over the years.
What better way to witness it from 1990/1991 from a laserdisc directly into my eyeballs?

I second that tour of New Zealand !
Love the myriad different travel discs that were issued on LD over the decades.
Thanks for that link to NZ travel LD.
A beautiful distraction from the mundane posts.
It appears that the original poster of this thread has the pulse of the situation......

Bye for now mates....

Two that I'd like so that we could make decent ld-decode captures of them publically available: Daicon III & IV: Opening Animation/Orochi Strikes Again (1988) [DCF-1], and a non-rotten (or at least less rotten) copy of the MIT Aspen Movie Map.
