I wonder if there is actually a laserdisc repository, where they are converted to digital - both audio and video - and then stored for future study or use? |

It would be awesome. I converted all of mine to digital, and automatically digitize any new one arriving my collection. |

Do you use USB or, in my good experience, Firewire? Thanks! Oh no. I'm old (52). Old school transfers. Pinnacle DV500 DVD + Adobe Premiere 6.5 from the late 90s (or early 00s, I don't remember): https://www.ebay.com/itm/193721568418 then, different home DVD recorders. No USB technology. Guess everything goes through those these days, lol. |

I wondered about this - there'd be obvious copyright issues for full movies (and not much point anyway), but for the other stuff that only existed on laserdisc it could be very useful. Potentially just a laserdisc only frontend for archive.org? |

After reading this thread, I personally believe that an archive of digitized LD disks would be very necessary, at least for private exchange of video material. But first, it would be necessary to establish some minimum quality standard, e.g. HUFFYUV video codec and 48Khz PCM audio, from which everyone could create any suitable format, such as DVD, SVCD, etc. I have a collection of over 300 LDs which I gradually try to digitize in my free time. I built a special computer for this purpose. With the last functional LD players, our film collections will be lost forever, so we should digitize what we can and exchange them as much as possible. Maybe everyone writes their own method of obtaining material from LD. There is a lot of garbage and faulty videos on YouTube. Regards. |

I wouldn’t worry about this “LD depot” idea until you have in your possession at least a dozen candidates. Stuff that is actually unique to LD and hasn’t already been put on YouTube in decent quality, when you have at least that, then worry about it. The idea of digitizing every LD you get…unless you buy only rare LDs that’s just a massive waste of storage. When I get something you can’t buy at all anymore I sometimes bother to upload it to YT. If it doesn’t get taken down then it may end up entertaining a lot of people. Some stuff I’ve done: A unique cut of the Wizard of Speed and Time sequence. 20k views. The one Driver’s Eyes disc I uploaded that didn’t get taken down by FOMA. 159k views. Super Heroine Collection 153k views. I don’t think these videos are going to be part of Toho’s (very impressive) effort to put all their stuff on YouTube. |
