I know people are interested in this as I've seen it come up in other threads, but I haven't seen a topic for it specifically.

Most anime released in Japan is, obviously, in Japanese. There is usually no English language track and no subtitles. There are some exceptions though and I think people would appreciate knowing about them. Its usually not a well advertised feature so often times you have to actually have the disc in your hands before you can get close enough to read the info on the back of the jacket.

Here are some I know of:

The Macross Plus "International Version" releases. These are basically the same show that came out originally, but re-released in Japan with the English dub. Evidently Japanese sometimes get a kick out of seeing shows dubbed into English.

Macross: (Do You Remember Love?): English Edition (1984) (Uncut) [TLL 2084]

This is the hilariously bad "Clash of the Bionoids" dub, but not edited down. It was extremely popular as a VHS bootleg back in the 80s. Most American Macross fans saw this version first and were blown away, despite the dub. "A man and a woman?" "What?" "A man and a woman!" This version has no Japanese track (no digital sound) and is mono so...please don't make this your only copy of Macross: DYRL. The Perfect Edition is so so much better.

Tenchi Muyo in Love: The Movie (1996) [PILA-1393]

This movie came out on LD several times for some reason. This version is overall the most impressive. Its AC-3 in Japanese with CC. There is even an English dub track, but of course that's in mono since its an AC-3 disc. This isn't my favorite LD by any stretch since the movie is so-so, but as far as a package goes its 10/10. It comes in a very nice box, it has a better than average AC-3 track, its CAV, and the last disc (bonus material) is gold instead of aluminum with extremely cool SD character art etched into it. Very nice.

The Spirit of Wonder - China-san no Yuuutsu TSL-0052 This one isn't in the database yet. I submitted it today after getting a copy. This is a 1996 re-release of the 1992 OVA. This time its dual language. I assume this is the dub Animeigo made. I can't imagine why anyone in Japan would want this dubbed into English. Perhaps they just wanted to reprint it and had the track laying around and just used it for the hell of it. The disc doesn't mention CC and I don't currently have a CC capable set-up so I can't test it. I'm going to assume there isn't a CC track.

Ghost in the Shell: Premium Box (1995) [BEAL-921]

A rather impressive box. Has CC and LD+G.

Akira: Special Collection (1988) [PILA-1086]

I know there are more. Everyone please add to this list!

Is the video transfer for the Japanese Spirit of Wonder re-release any better than the Animeigo one?

There is also a second release of Tenchi Muyo in Love, in CLV.
This does not have english audio on analog, but instead it has english CC subtitles.

Tenchi Muyo in Love: The Movie (1996) [PILA-1390]

Also, not to forget about the Memories Box which has english CC and LD+G subtitles (but no english audio)

Memories (1995) [BEAL-926]

To be honest, I don't like english dubs of anime at all.
Japanese voice actors are superior imho, and a lot of the original strength gets lost when you watch stuff dubbed.
That is why english audio never was something that made me wanna buy an anime LD for.
Subtitles are very welcome though.

The Ghibli ga Ippai thing is a bit misleading, sort of like saying its an AC-3 box. Only Whisper of the Heart is AC-3 (LDDB says On Your Mark as well, but since its a stereo music video I'm not sure why that would make sense) and only 4 out the 11 discs have dubs on them. I'd hate to have someone buy a $900+ box set and not be happy with it so I'm mentioning it here.

I'm curious about these random Pioneer titles that pop up. It makes sense that they would maybe have CC or dubs on them since the US versions did, but why only Vol 2 of Hakkenden? Something's up. I'm wondering if maybe someone had some mismatched jackets/discs. Some of those Pioneer anime LDs from that time had US jackets that were basically identical to the JP ones other than the requisite tissue thin paper they used for the US. They even had tear-away backs on them that revealed the same back side text as the JP version, and possibly catalog number as well.

sorry, I of course quoted the wong post...I have changed the ghibli collection so its now stated that only 4 have englsh. I have only listed the movies were it actually stated on lddb.com that they include english. Its a big chance that other volumes of Hakkenden have english aswell but it doesnt say on lddb.com.

I just watched The Spirit of Wonder tonight. The disc is in the style of Animeigo's "hybrid" discs. Side one is the OVA with Japanese on the digital and English on the analog. Side two is Japanese on both tracks with hard subtitle, including during the credits, and Animeigo is credited for the translation.

I don't think this is the exact same disc as the US one though. It has the logos for Toshiba EMI, the Japanese "no copy" warnings, and no Animeigo logos or trailers for other Animeigo stuff.

As for video quality versus the US version, sorry, I have no idea. I've only ever seen the US VHS and that was a friend's copy 15 years ago. Watching the disc though it seems very good. Very little noise, quite sharp, as good or better than what I'd expect from a OVA from 1992.

The AnimEigo Spirit of Wonder does not have dual audio on the unsubtitled side. (It took me rather a long time to find a copy.)

Yes, the Ghibli box has AC-3 on the On Your Mark disc, which also contains a number of other things, including an extensive trailer collection — some of those trailers are 5.1.

The Armitage III movie was released in Japan in English with Japanese subtitles, & I am quite confident that a good part of those other randomly-assorted discs were entered into the database as bilingual by mistake.
