Post subject:  Appearances of Laserdiscs in unexpected places...

Maybe a little off-topic but sometimes I am watching something and suddenly jump on my seat "It's a LD!".

We all know already about the "Back to the Future II" piles of LDs trashed in the back alley:

Very cool! I knew of Back to the Future Part II, but I can't think of any others... but If I recall correctly on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) the Tim & Eric show had a special holiday special. One of the characters they called Dee-Vee, (Like a DVD) had what looked like an 8" LaserDisc on his chest.

In the Richard Pryor film Bustin' Loose, there is a scene with a rack of Discovision discs. Another Discovision reference is in Airport '79. They use a disc for the in-flight announcement. Of course these were both shameless plugs in Universal films.

The movie SLC Punk has a short sequence with a guy showing off his LaserDisc setup. "It looks like a shiny record…"

I remember in one of the earlier series of Friends that Ross declares that he has got a LaserDisc player and was hoping the rest of the crew would hang around to test it out.

Also it is brought up in The Sopranos. Of all things I think they were watching The Godfather and the Priest character remarks on the quality of the image.

Technically you don't see the discs, but I thought it was worth a mention.

There actually is a Laserdisc in Back To The Future, not only in part 2. In the first scene right after Marty has blown the speakers, there is a Laserdisc on the wall that you can see in the take when the clocks are ringing.

Checkout the start where a CD is thrown and the image then switches to a laserdisc and then back to a CD!
I guess the LD being thrown was easier to film.

Then checkout scene at 2:12 where some dude is DJing with a laserdisc!

Came to think of yet another one: Be Kind Rewind. In the scene where Mike is desperatley searching for a copy of Ghostbusters and calls a friend, he says "You got it? Oh no, not on DVD, I need it on VHS.. Well, they said that about Laserdisc too you know!" or something like that. Pretty funny actually if you're into LD.

Just heard a commercial on the radio this morning for Farmer's Insurance which opened up with:
Quote:
Does your insurance company think you're watching Laserdiscs on a tube TV in your home?
Then it went on about home owners insurance covering expensive electronics. It gave me a bit of a chuckle hearing that. Especially since I actually am watching Laserdiscs on a tube TV in my home!

In the film Starman when they open the alien spacecraft at the military base. The disc found on the craft is pretty close to being a laserdisc. This is the disc our space program sent out into space hoping other worlds would find and learn of Earth. It's a "gold anodized disc with greetings from Earth in 54 languages." It's the same size as an ld but in the spacecraft scene it appears to have a hole in the middle for playing a 33lp. BUT, in a later scene the same disc is played on a machine and in the close up shots it has the same opening as a laserdisc with what could be a laser delivering device to the left. It looks like a laserdisc to me and it makes sense that we would send our "newest technology" at that time into space for the aliens to discover.

I can't believe I just recalled this one, but in the 3rd G.I. Joe cartoon miniseries back in the 80s, the Joes stole a "Laserdisc" that held the plans for secret weapon.

"Top Secret Laserdisc"

Playing the Laserdisc

Good Gawd, I can't believe I thought those 'toons were awesome back in the day!
