Today I got some LaserDiscs, including the HBO Video release of Highlander, which was distributed by Image Entertainment. [ID6679HB] The disc was manufactured by 3M, and it's edge is sticky. If I'm correct, it's the glue that was used to put the disc together.

This isn't the first time I've encountered a sticky disc issue. I used to have the LaserDisc of Last Days of Man on Earth (a US cut of the British film The Final Programme) as well as a US full screen copy of Total Recall, I don't remember the catalogue numbers, but I do at least recall that they both were also Image Entertainment discs manufactured by 3M. They also had sticky edges.

Was this, like, a really common issue for 3M? I should also note the Highlander LaserDisc I got is from 1989, and the other 2 discs I mentioned were from the early 1990s, like 1991 I think. Maybe it was just a common issue in that particular timeframe?

Would it be a good idea to avoid playing sticky-edged discs?

It means nothing. Keep spinning the discs.

From what I can remember.
Disclord posted that it was all 3M discs made for a short period of time that have sticky edges.
I believe it was due to the way they were made, I think it was a style of using a sticky to press them rather than some type of heat or chemical, more like a peel and stick.

No need to avoid them its just a thing on certain discs, you can clean the sticky edge and it should never come back, I'll have to check the one disc I do know
that is sticky but haven't touched it in 8 or so years. Maybe I shouldn't even bother keeping it if I have watched it in 8-12 years now

I wouldn’t feel comfortable cleaning off the stickiness. There is always that possibility that it might open up the disc to laser rot.

As Zeta said, leave it alone as it doesn’t affect playability.

One thing that might be a problem is if the glue really starts leaking over the sides and sticks to the elephant condom and the main surfaces of the disc.

This happened to several of my Japanese LDs and it was a pain to clean off (all but one still worked after cleaning though, and the one that didn't still partially worked, I might just need to flatten it).

I used to live in a Japanese apartment that got really hot in the summer though, so that probably had something to do with it.

Yes, Toshiba (TOLW-xxxx) discs are famous for becoming very sticky over the years...

Yeah. That’s much worse than the 3M problem. But if you’re superheating your discs for months at a time it’s not the discs’ fault to be honest…

It was maybe 95-97 degrees F max. I wouldn't really call that superheated, especially considering it only affected a tiny percentage of my discs.

Didn't know this about Toshiba discs?
Thought they were precision manufactured like swiss clockwork
