I just rub the glue off. It has never had any effect on laser rot as far as I can tell.

I've noticed many 3M laserdiscs tend to have extra glue on the edges but no sign of rot.

Maybe 5% or 6% of my collection (I own around 170 individual titles) suffers from Rot of some type. Most of the Rot discs are still playable ... some play okay on one player and not on another (go figure). I've had to send two LD(s) back to seller due to Rot.

I avoid Sony DADC discs (I own some), Disco Vision, and any other LD(s) that have multiple reports of Laser Rot.

Laser Rot never bothered me ... since my cull rate for Vinyl LP(s) is much higher than LD(s). My cull rate for Vinyl LP(s) is somewhere in the 33% range ... and yes, I do check the used LP visual condition very carefully.

My father recounts horror stories of the bad LP pressings of the 1970s. Personally, my biggest problem with laser rot has been that one of the American anime publishers, AD Vision, used Sony DADC USA exclusively. So, while they didn't release nearly enough of their catalog on LD (so far as I am concerned), it's terribly difficult to find a clean copy of what they did release — & sometimes quite expensive, at least in the case of Battle Angle, which retains its value better than most anime LDs thanks to having been taken off the market a decade ago by James Cameron.

I've done my best to avoid known US rotters at all costs but haven't been possible to do that with japanese releases as I've really wanted to have couple of reported titles in my collection and unaffected specimens are next to impossible to obtain - if such a things even exist. In most cases rot is present in visual form but I have couple of discs (JAP Martin and Captain Kronos for example) where it has caused errors only on audio tracks leaving picture either completely or almost clean, dunno how common this is?

I have a couple of the big rotters, the Cable Guy, Starship Troopers, Striptease and I can't seem to find any rot on them.

Is there someone with a good copy (without rot) of Eraser (1996) [14202]? I have 3 copies and they all are really bad.

I will make an attempt to watch my copies of eraser this weekend and see if i have anything good. I do know i have a good copy of starship troopers. Or at least I did a few years back.

im having a problem with a couple of movies ive got lately.. where side 1 would be find,, but when i flip the disc it goes black and white and flickers all over the place.. then after fast forwarding it about 20 mins in it slowly goes back to normal..
is that laser rot or something else?

My first experience was with a copy of Crash. It was sealed, brand new. I knew that it was potentially a rotter and had a huge internal debate on whether to open it or keep it mint. Ultimately I decided I had actually bought it to view it and threw it in. Some light rot to start with nothing too upsetting. Then there was the side change... click, click... 'What's happened to the audio!'.

I've seen a lot of people turn to the Japanese release for 2 reasons:


Eraser (1996) [PILF-2280]

• No Rot
• AC3 soundtrack (US is surround)

I remember some LDDb member telling me they had to go through a dozen US copies before finding an acceptable one.

That's a player problem, I feel sure. Specific information on the films & involved, & whether (say) it happens if you change discs rather than flip, &c, will be of help in pinning it down, but it could be a tracking fault.

the films,, its happened on so far,, is the blues brothers, bond: Thunderball, Once upon a Forrest.. i mean thats so far,, funny thing is with bond and blues brothers,,, side 3 both worked fine,, it was just side 2..odd hey..
see this player isnt that old to me yet,, ive only had a ld player since august. but ive been really careful with it,, not to let it get dusty or the dics damaged or anything like that.. when i first got it i never had this problem,, even with forrest.
(ive been a game collector for about 10 years so i understand the value of looking after my s**t.)
i was thinking it could also be the player too,, heres a question,, can it hurt the player having a ps3 on top of it? That's it isn't it?

Maybe is time to start looking for another player. Something a little newer than 1992 maybe this time.

Is this a manual side flip or an auto flip? It's not unknown for a player to work better on one side than the other with auto side flip, especially if there's a big heavy object pressing down on the top. If you are manually flipping the discs, something different is going on.

I had plenty rot on me. Mostly thee usual suspects circa mid 90's WB and Columbia titles. I'm pretty sure I lost the CAV Criterion of Hard-Boiled as well.

Okay I just popped one in that definitely has rot. Its Emmanuel. Sort of an off the wall title. I put it in and it immediately that tons of multi colored sparkles and sounded just awful. Got worse as that side went on. The other side has very minor rot. For some reason I thought you'd be able to see rot form on the outside of the disc, like black spots or something.
