I use those mailers, however, I have 2 or 3 pieces of cardboard between a bubble and the disc. The LP mailers can get up to an inch tall and I use every single one of that inch. There is about 2/5 an inch of cardboard on top and bottom of the LD. I have yet to have something damaged. You can play frisbee with the thing and still come out on top!

Wow I buy my boxes specail - just for laserdiscs - Not the thin (Pizza box) ones, mine are 3" thick. Am I the only seller out there who is really picky about any box that I send items in? In all my years on Ebay I have never had anything arrive broken, I'm talking 15 or more years now...But I also charge a little extra on shipping to cover the cost of shipping items and customers seem to get upset sometimes over that..Which makes me laugh...do they think companies ship items to them for free? Anyway - try requesting specific shiiping before buying the discs..I think most sellers will agree to those terms and if they don't then they are most likely not sellers you want to buy from...Okay that's my thought for the day...LOL I'm not allowed any more....

Where do you get your boxes? I build mine up on occasion with more cardboard on the outside. You put 3 inches of cardboard in your box? Seriously? I do an inch, which is 5 pieces of cardboard and 2 pieces of bubblewrap inbetween. I have shipped over 1000 discs and have never had one arrive broken, or damaged. All I can say is wow, that is crazy.

They are 13 x 13 x 4" Corrugated Boxes by Uline it cost $13.75 for 25 of them...I use bubble wrap - peanuts and old scrabble boards - I sell scrabble tiles and holders and used to throw away the boards, now I cut them up and use them...All my movies have heavy plastic covers so I can group them together and not worry about scratched covers...This box allows me to ship many movies together, which is good since most of my sales are multiples... Take care! Good sales and have a magical weekend!!! Happy Veterans Day!!!

It has been a while since I received a laserdisc in just a jiffy bag but one arrived today.
I don't think anyone would be surprised to hear the disc was cracked all the way across so totally ruined. The crack was also on the play side.
The seller had not used any other protection other than relying on the strength of the jiffy bag and the laserdisc jacket.

So just posting another update to this topic in despair.

Well here's my horror story that just happened to me!
I received the "Master Of The World" which I got a decent price for finally, but
the seller failed to pack it right. He threw it in a handmade fold up cardboard without
bubblewrap or cardboard squares to protect it and it was able to move around inside also,
plus the makeshift box wasn't even big enough for the flaps to overlap, it was shy about a
inch and a half. Well...opened it up and sure enough the disc split open the spine and bottom edge.
But here's the depressing part...the disc was snapped in two, not once but twice!
Seller's response... so sorry, never had a problem before... got refunded but man...a little extra time and
effort would of not cost him the title and shipping cost... what a waste of a uncommon title!

My packing is 1 to 3 discs per LP mailer depending on the size of the discs. then bubble wrap and 3 to 5 cardboard backers per side. It makes it pretty stiff and well, safe. I have send over 1k discs around and never once had one damaged.

It's happened this week!!!!!

No bubble wrap, a 'converted' cardboard box - ie...roughly folded over without much thought. And here is the proof...

...and once it was out....

So, what was it...any guesses?

Having said that, I contacted the seller and told them...with the nett result being that he will refund me for it totally, so it was free!!!!

One of us needs to step up and create a web page illustrating how to properly package LDs for shipment. Then we can all use that URL as a reference point (e.g. send the link to sellers asking if they are willing to package our LDs accordingly).

Thank you for that most excellent idea nems !
Spot-on !
A tutorial for the ups and downs of adequate and inadequate packaging.
Not that difficult to ensure the precious cargo arrives intact with jacket undamaged.
Common sense is not that common after all .....
And let's face it ...some need help thinking "within" the box .... LOL !!!!
Nice thread guys !

From personal experience I'd say women are a thousand times better at packaging items than men.
They seem to have an innate natural ability at doing this task to perfection every time without being told how to do it.
Men tend to underpack items or introduce unnecessary weight which offers no more protection and increases shipping costs.
Men will even ignore packaging advice thinking 'they know better' which is of course absolute rubbish!

There is no better proof of this if I look at my own collection of laserdisc players and discs and pick out the pristine copies all of which were packed by female sellers.

I don't sell laserdiscs... just only ones I've sent to friends. Being in Canada the cost here to ship a laserdisc is way out of line. (compared to USA shipping costs) If the package weight is from 500 grams to 1000 grams (a properly packaged laserdisc) from Canada to USA cost almost 15.00 to ship 1 disc. And from Canada to another country like the UK for example is about 37.00 to ship 1 disc. And that's just regular airmail (we don't have media mail)

If the package is under 500 grams, the price goes down alot to about 9.50 USA and 19.00 UK and that would require a very light thin box with no extra padding or protector sleeve on the jacket. This might be the case with some other countries, that they are trying to keep the weight under their limit, and they cut short on the packaging.

Every single disc I packs comes out to 1lb 10 ounces. I use a record mailer and put 2 pieces of bubble wrap on the top and bottom of the disc. It would usually have a protective sleeve around it as well unless I am out. I then put 3 pieces of cardboard 12 by 12 around the discs so there are 3 pieces on top and 3 pieces on bottom. The record mailer puffs up to 1 ince. I use every inch of it. If I do it right you can bounce the item off a wall. If I need more corner protection I take more cardboard and put it on top of the record mailer. I have had 0 complaints about this in over 500 sales. I have been on the lookout for 14 inch pizza boxes so I can double box the things but they are few and far between.
