What does everyone think are the best Laserdiscs ever made in terms of picture quality? Feel free to add screenshots of these as well. |

Austin Powers is really impressive and also Starship Troopers. The THX squeeze edition of T2 is probably a firm favourite. |

Saving Private Ryan is a good one. I understand it is closer to the theatrical picture (in terms of colors and such) than the DVD. |

The discs in my collection that stand out in terms of picture quality are: 1) Game, The: Special Edition #365 (1997) [CC1520L] 2) Jurassic Park (1993) [41830] 3) Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Special Edition (1991) (Uncut) [PSE82997-6WS] 4) Fifth Element, The (1997) [82406] Fifth Element is known as a bad rotter but if you can find it in good condition then the picture looks great. |

I took some screenshots middle of last year when I found a way of hooking up my player to my computer. I keep meaning to go back and try again now that I have a new player but I've not got around to it, de-interlacing can also cause a bit of a problem when trying to take screenshots so any pics you see should be taken with a pinch of salt. I'll try and take some fresh ones of the titles I mentioned above over the next few days using my DVL 919E but for now here's a few screenshots of Jurassic Park taken on an old, beaten up CLD V2120D:   Nom  Where'd my food go? Always liked the picture quality of: Thelma and Louise Goldeneye True Lies Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (Letterbox version) Evening Star Most titles in Universal's Signature collection Always found that laserdiscs from Buena Vista (Touchstone/Hollywood pictures) had not so good picture quality, with usually a bit softer and blurred PQ. |

As I said in my post, the interlaced nature of laserdiscs can cause some oddities in the picture when you try to display them on a progressive computer monitor. For example, in the second picture there's a lot of blocking, especially noticeable on Laura Dern's arm, this does not appear when I watch it on a TV screen. The software I was using at the time did have some advanced de-interlacing algorithms but unfortunately they didn't affect screenshots so this is without any form of interlacing at all so may actually be a single field rather than a combined frame. When I get the chance to hook up the DVL 919E to the PC I'll see if I can get a more accurate image. |

I've never seen a Hong Kong LD but whenever I've looked them up I'm always confused by the fact they often release a film over separate releases. For example: Iron Monkey: Part I (1993) [ML 876] Iron Monkey: Part II (1993) [ML 877] Are two parts of the same 90 min film but are separate releases. No idea what the picture quality of HK releases are like though. I've only seen one Japanese laserdisc but it was an early 80s release so I wasn't that blown away by the quality. |

When I get the chance to hook up the DVL 919E to the PC I'll see if I can get a more accurate image. doesn't really look like interlacing to me, if it was, it would be more prominent on the picture where the dinosaur moves his head. usually video apps saves snapshots without interlacing. it would have been interesting to see the pictures capped from you dvl |

After mucking about more with hooking the LD player up to the PC it seems with my current equipment I can't get any higher quality screenshots; they look pretty much the same with a slight difference in colour. However watching these on a proper TV screen there is a massive difference. I've not got a brilliant graphics card so I'm guessing that or the RCA to USB cable are the weak points. I'll try and take some pictures from the TV Screen over the weekend. |

Anything that can send NTSC video over USB is doing a crapload of (probably very low end) hardware compression. That's where the problem is going to be. |

Watched Double Jeopardy (1999) last night. Picture quality was very impressive. Put the receiver in ProLogic mode to feel "surrounded" since this it's not an AC-3 release. I was pleasantly surprised in terms of PQ I'm sure the last released titles are Technical superior to early laserdisc releases. |

So far I'd say Phantom Menace which we compared awhile back. But anytime there's a movie or music title that hasn't been released again I enjoy seeing it on LD. |
