As someone that live through them being the main format, cassette tapes are awful.

Cassettes were never the “main” format. They were the main format for recording, for cars, and for kids, but records were the hifi choice until CD replaced them.

Cassette was a format I used a lot back in the day. When I got an portable CD and MD player I never bought another cassette. For sure cassette can sound good, better than MD, but I seldom needed what the format was really capable of. I just needed to record and the convenience of MD is so much greater than cassette I forgave the quality issue.

I had a pretty good time with cassette but my issues were:

Can’t read the lyrics in the case, even worse than CD.
They wear out if you play them.
Setting levels when dubbing is time consuming.
No random access.
Retail cassettes sound worse than ones you can make yourself from CD (this was a big one for me).

Type II and IV tapes sounded quite good, but no commercially released album used them as far as I know and until a company starts selling a new tape deck that supports those tapes with Dolby NR, I won't consider the format to have truly made a comeback.

The clv one that is readily available even online for like $1. It's really great, showcases LD well. Incredible sound.

Well, prerecorded tapes that had the digilog or HQ or Dolby HX Pro logo on them already sounded quite good on a good deck. You can achieve excellent results with a prerecorded tape, even a decent type I tape, in
a Nakamichi. What I do not like about recording on tape is that hassle of setting the proper bias and recording levels. I find that a bit annoying especially if you have different tapes. I usually collect soundtracks on tape because of the artwork and the J cards. I have plenty of prerecorded tapes that sound really OK in my Nakamichi.

Some Japanese pre-recorded Type I tapes I have from the '80s absolutely beat the equivelent CDs on my minty Sony KA5ES, a nice late 3 head deck. There's also that analogue quality you get with tape vs CD. Less fatiguing, natural sound.

Yep Confederate, the monitor function on serious decks is essential to tweak the settings before you seriously record. I have a Type IV dedicated to testing and setting up levels. I'm into dubbing SACDs to my Type IVs, they saturate pretty quickly but I can still get very nice recordings.. It seems more pure than jumping through all the hoops it takes to rip DSD.

Yes, I use the monitor function on my Nakamichi too and I am satisfied with the results yet I have a feeling that it can be done better.

I also have some very good type I tapes that sound really good on my Nakamichi. The Star The Next Generation soundtrack tape I got last week ( made in 1988 ) sounds excellent.

Meet Joe Black (1998) [LD 83377-WS]

Picked this up the other day having never seen it. The movie is...whatever but the PQ is like DVD. Later release and man it looked great!
