My DVL-700 needs a new turntable mat because discs slip terribly and it also needs a new loading belt - the one it has now is the original and often can't lift the motor and laser to play a disc. It also needs relubed and general realignment. There's nothing wrong with it electrically though. I'm going to have Duncan work on it and do the mod to make it a DVL-90 with the adjustable video NR and DVD firmware update. Would doing this bring the video quality up considerably? I hardly even use mine for LD because it's so smeary. I have to choose between matrixed audio and better picture or discrete 5.1 and blurry/smeared. I have a few rotters and rotted sides, but the worst are the two that will completely lock up in places. My DTS Shadow looks mint but will drop the audio halfway through on my d702 until I swap to another LD for a few minutes, and skip/freeze/lock up on the DVL-700 in certain areas. Got a new copy of the THX Die Hard with a Vengeance as part of a trilogy set, and despite being very clean, it had the same lock up/freezing and skipping issues on both players at the end of side 1 and beginning of side 2. |

Is there any report on disc rot on compact discs made by DADC back in the days when they were heavily plagued by Laserrot? |

I'm not sure what LaserRot looks like, but the ANGELO MY LOVE I played looked horrible at times, like an old VHS tape. Is that what it looks like, with snow/static? |

Is the movie audio distorted or is it the camera causing this? Could be nothing more that dirt or possible scratches on the disc causing this. Try to look for speckles which are mainly red - green or blue. |

looks like it could be some light rot, but that's how light it is it may never get any worse. when you get a disc with rot you will know what it looks like. if you don't notice anything then it's not rot don't worry until you get a bad one. |

I'm gonna post this here since everyone missed it. I'm pretty sure this is very mild rot. I'm upgrading the capture machine; that's the absolute best quality it'll output; and that's still pretty poor. http://dewdu.de/Movie-0000.mpg |

Pretty much all of my LD's have at least a small bit of Laser Rot (the worst ones: The Mask (Pionner Japan), and Firefox (DADC USA). The best: Total Recall (Pionner USA)). I am wondering, is it possible for Laser Rot to get worse over the years, and basically destroy my whole collection eventually? |

ALL your LDs have rot? Are you sure it's not your player or maybe just misunderstanding what rot actually is? That's some one in a million bad luck if you really do have so much rot. |

So you only have six discs? Did you by chance just get them from a guy who, maybe, was just dumping his rotters on you? I just got my forth rotter the other day. My collection is nearly 300. |

Are these specific frames that have these errors or do they appear constantly for at least several seconds? Few LDs are perfect, most have a speckle or two, maybe some rolling drop outs. Rot looks like multi-colored snow. Also, are the discs %100 perfectly clean? Any imperfection or crud on the surface can be visible. Buying 6 random LDs from 6 different people and having them all be rotters is HIGHLY unlikely. Nearly impossible. |

From the pics it doesn't look too bad - in fact, if those specks are not constantly all over the image through the whole side, I'd say they look just like normal manufacturing defects - inclusions, dust trapped under the pastic during manufacture. LaserDisc's were hard to make since they were analog and had no error correction, so specks here and there are totally normal. Now, a burst of them or continuous speckling throughout the whole side, is a different story. |

Another thing about speckles - if you have a player that has digital video processing that does digital NR, the playback picture will be much cleaner than a still frame on a CLV disc because on Pioneer players with DVNR and digital FX (even non-adjustable NR ones like the DVL-700), the noise reduction turns off when you still frame a CLV disc, making noise suddenly visible. On Panasonic's LX-900, the DVNR stays on during CLV still and slow. To me, if a disc looks fine in normal playback, it's an OK disc. |

Could that be rot, then? |
