Post subject:  The Laserdisc Screenshot Thread

Apologies if this thread has been made previously, but I thought it would be fun to have a official Laserdisc screenshot thread where we all post pictures of Laserdiscs on our displays running in action to get a slight idea about how good or bad the picture quality is depending on the disc.

Here is a couple of pictures of the Pioneer pressing of Men in Black which just arrived today. Its running on a 32" LCD HD TV via a CLD-D925 model.

Just used a Fujifilm 10.2 mega pixel camera to shoot them.

I think the transfer overall is pretty good from the bits I've seen (sometimes you'd be mistaken for thinking its a DVD!) I plan to watch the entire film in whole tonight or tomorrow night.

Most of the artifacting you see here actually comes from trying to photograph a CRT, not from the disc itself. This disc is amazing, quality-wise. CAV+early Technicolor = GOOD.

DAMN THAT LOOKS GOOD! I bought the BD cheaply to have the 1080p version, but now the Criteiron CAV has jumped up in my wishlist.

Yeah, I'm not some sort of huge Robin Hood fan or anything, but I do like this movie the LD is friggn amazing, IMHO.

I got near lucky with this picture as the other settings was over exposing the contrast levels with sheer bright white. I think I used SR AUTO and one of the user modes "Landscape" that managed to get it within a tiny shade of what I was seeing on the bed sheet.

Ok some scenery screenshots here. My Pioneer cld-3030 to a Toshiba LCD with a Polaroid 5.1 mega pixel camera. I used the Natural mode aspect setting, which displays it exactly as the disc was made (so the black bars on the sides)

Somewhere along the line those images are getting jpeg-ed to death. :(

Thanks for contributing so far everyone. I know that taking direct pictures off from the display unit with a camera with the added compression of JPEG files are hardly a full indicator to how these Laserdiscs look in motion, but its awesome to see regardless, because if nothing else, it does give you a idea about the coloring, the contrast and the black levels..

Its also good to see a couple of you using LCD units like me too. I don't why some people complain about modern HD TV's not being recommended for Laserdisc. I just watched Men in Black last night in full, and I thought it looked stunning! Like I said at some points, it looked just as good as a DVD.

Heh, it's funny. I was just feeling sorry for the owners of some of these sets because of how aliased and weird they look. :)

It's problem isn't "HDTV", the problem is "HDTV built with zero regard for SD signals". Plasma sets from Panasonic and Pioneer look WONDERFUL running LD, but the latest $300 Vizio thing at Kmart...not so much. The shots I posted are from an HDTV that is a CRT. LCD is part of the problem, but not the whole story. The big issue is OEMs just cheaping out on the SD stages of the TVs. After all, they don't make any SD players so why should they care?

I'm sure LDs do look as good as DVD on many HDTVs...if the DVD is hooked up via composite, because its going to have its signal murdered in the same way. Aside from MPEG2 artifacting (which is not a minor concern) a proper modern day DVD player with line doubling, HDMI, etc, should produce a signal that obliterates any LD. I'm talking about the quality of the signal here, not overall video quality. Many LDs beat many DVDs video quality-wise.

Well admittedly my bedroom 32" HD TV is not a household name, it is about 3 years old and is not 1080p Full-HD. However in my experience, it actuelly does seem to handle Laserdisc analog signals very well. VHS looked completely unwatchable and stretched to hell, LD though even with older discs from the early 80's, are perfectly fine with like I said later discs producing far better picture stability and clarity.

I am not doubting that Plasma sets from Panasonic and Pioneer don't look better, they would probably look much much better, but it doesn't mean other well sized HDTV displays from good viewing distances even if they are LCD, don't look decent with the right picture settings and with all DNR turned off too.

I have a Panasonic upconverting DVD player, and to be fair it does blow Laserdisc away (as it should) with the added benefits of DVDs having anamorphic enhancements, progressive scan, upscaling to 1080i, HDMI connections, THX optimizing calibration settings etc. My initial comment was more about Laserdisc matching DVD when I was using my old standard DVD/VCR combo player which wasn't the best DVD player in the world which was hooked up with composite like my LD player is now.

Out of curiosity, what would be some tittles where the LD has the upper hand over the DVD in terms of video quality?

Dark City is the big one for me. The DVD, the original one, is a showcase for everything that sucks about MPEG2. It's a giant 100 minute macroblock from hell.

Image is a bit stepping on the digital freeze on CLV discs. CAV gives a nice smooth still frame image.

So you paused to get Yoda/Luke? It actually looks pretty good then. Digital freeze is pretty aliased and low color depth compared to a running image on most (all?) players. I think it's like 240 lines, 8 bit color.

To get my shots I set an A-B repeat loop for the section I wanted so I could concentrate on shooting without having to mess with the player. I used a shutter speed of 1/40 and that seemed to be best for reducing flicker. I took probably two dozen shots. :)
