I disagree, it's worth it for the AC-3 track and the experimental look of anamorphic LD. I love my copy of T2 non-THX squeeze.

Watched Goldeneye a couple of nights ago on Laserdisc. Great image quality for the most part especially in our door exteriors. These screenshots are not the greatest representation, looks much much better in person, even hitting pause sucks the quality out of the picture, but anyway here they are:

Thanks for the pics. Both sets look really good to me. Seems like Wizard of Oz regardless of the player its being played on, is a good looking Laserdisc in general.

Thought I'd contribute with these screencaps I made tonight. There's fifty of them from several movies so I won't post them here, but here's a direct link to their Imgur album.

I used a CLD-3070 connected via composite to a Panasonic DMR-ES10 recording in XP mode with line-in NR on. The screens were captured and de-interlaced through VLC.

Discs featured:

Alien: Special Widescreen Collector's Edition (1979) [1090-85]
Apocalypse Now (1979) [LV 2306-2WS]
Blade Runner: Director's Cut (1992) [12682]
Robocop: Special Edition #198 (1987) (Uncut) [CC1350L]
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Special Edition (1937) [2921 CS]
Thing, The (1982) [42654]

Not exactly what they look like in person on a nice CRT, but still a good indication of LD's potential. :)

Amazing screenshots, top notch work! Those look so good that some of them could be mistaken for DVD. If anything looks rough around the edges its probably the animated stuff though.

HOLY SMOKES!

Seriously! Those look like downscaled bluray shots! You can even make out film grain overlaying the picture and background definition is amazing! I seriously can't believe you got that from composite output... The colors are really vivid and textures pop out. That's just ridiculous that technology from the late 1970's does that. Major props to you for getting that from a composite source; you didn't even use the X0 everyone seems to regard as being the best.

As a matter of fact this is my first post. I just joined after seeing dissapointing results from bluray movies, most notably screenshots of evil dead 2 (25th anniversary edition from lions gate) and the new 3D jurassic park. It's so dumb of producers to artificially impose image enhancement, digital noise reduction, and sharpening onto the print when users can do that on their tv's or software player; (why tamper the source with crud?). It just doesn't make sense. I prefer things to stay true to their source and I've found these new blu-ray releases dissapointing. I also don't like DVD for its smaller color and compression space for video (seen TV HD movies downscaled to DVD resolution and colors are always very pale on DVD version; it's like 16-bit color vs 24-bit color) .

Seriously wasn't expecting laser disc to look like this (maybe some kind of pseudo enhanced vhs like quality or something). Never had laserdisc but I've seen packaging of some movies and it's really impressive stuff (very luxurious with booklets, pamphlets, large poster like packaging, etc). Also seen screen grabs from people digitizing unique laser disc releases and results look nothing like yours. I wonder, are your pics and others a scam?

Just spent about $200.00 importing German releases of Army of Darkness Ultimate Edition and Evil Dead 2 Limited edition blurays (supposedly a new transfer; better not be the same 25th anniversary U.S. release). Reason I paid so much is no decent release of these movies exist anywhere else in the world (Austria? maybe laserdisc is an exception haha. I know Evil Dead 1 does have the best release on a 1980's Japanese hologram LD without altered color timing). Lions gate U.S. 25th Anniversary Evil Dead 2 was supposedly improved over previous release without digital enhancement or filtering, but screenshots show bad black crush giving less picture info in dark scenes (older release with bad filtering has all the picture without black crush problems). And why does star wars have the worst tampering? Seriously, if you're recording an ultimate play that's totally unique from 30-40 years past with memorable people acting do you really think it's good to go back and change things with digital monsters and what not? really upset from that.

Here's the Evil Dead 1 dvd laser disc comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeaLiJVvy1c I noticed the definition's better on the LD so I don't know if it's the users fault for the way it's compressed. Either way the LD has the original unaltered color timing, more picture frame, and all film elements are present (bloopers like camera guy appearing in reflections, video noise and what not).

Sorry for ranting but I still am stunned from your screengrabs (had similar feeling on a youtube video with evil dead 1 ld vs dvd comparison but this takes the cake). Many thanks to the OP for this thread.

Regards

These may not do an amazing justice for the picture quality of Urusei Yatsura: Movie #5 The Final Chapter (1988) [AD093-008], but whatever.

Okay....my laserdisc is the Pioneer CLD 2950,and its fed into a Samsung 42"....its plugged from composite, from the Player, with Scart into the TV,I found that a clearer picture rather than just feeding straight into Composite.....The pics about to be displayed were the settings my eyes enjoyed for about a year before I calibrated the tv properly using Video Essentials,I get a much different picture now.....So here are some pics from the old settings.........

An American Werewolf in London

here is the links for the pictures.................

Here is my setup.......
http://s5.postimg.org/98ag1v9av/SAM_5301.jpg

The opening titles...

The Pub.....

Here are the pictures you had for comparision.......

http://s5.postimg.org/m3ifomok7/SAM_5308.jpg

Here is a shot to show the black levels.......

Here is to show the colour......

And her is a little transformation for fun.......
http://s5.postimg.org/v7lg2tfiv/SAM_5319.jpg
http://s5.postimg.org/r9tkzo3br/SAM_5322.jpg

Saving Private Ryan,a bit difficult to capture images as there is very little that is still in the film, due to the nature of the way it was shot,so some pics are blurry and not as sharp as they are on the tv. Also because of the high contrast look which spielberg used,it looks about half as better Ive noticed on tv,its also darker on my tv than in the pictures,I havent retouched the images at all......nice colours when there is colour in the image and the picture is nice and sharp with no picture noise,it looks softer in the pics tho........

http://s5.postimg.org/us8iwenvb/SAM_5356.jpg

Okay....now time for Starship Troopers...I personally have yet to watch the film, and it will be awhile because I sorted all my laserdiscs in order of when they are released and only just watched Alien.......looking at the pics it seems to have one of the best transfers Ive ever seen.....no signs of digital noise at all, very bold colours and strong skin tones, deep blacks and very white whites....again some of the images are not as sharp as they are on my tv..

The title......

This one shows the colour which nearly burned my retinas off.....

I'm kinda suprised those shots look that good coming from your 3030 (has an older tbc).

Does anyone know the TBC in the pioneer cld-s201 player?

guessing that that's rather telling of just how smashingly good a pressing the '95 TOP GUN actually is?

also, IIRC, i used the player's DIGITAL STILL FRAME to pause those shots before photographing them,
so that probably accounts for a good of the grain and image noise seen.

i should retake some of those shots in actual motion to show just how good the 3030 really is.
won't be easy though, what with the whiplash editing and all...
