I haven't seen The Matrix theatrically so I don't know what it looked like, but either way I do still prefer the Blu-Ray. It's the smoothest of them all, has coolest colors (which I prefer over the brown and boring look) and best textures. Then if you find the Laserdisc or DVD to be better because the colors aren't altered, then that's your opinion. Just because the film looked one way theatrically doesn't mean that the director or cinematagropher can't change his mind of how he wants the film to look.

And the LD vs. DVD thing is kind of uninteresting imo. In terms of picture and sound quality, the only thing that's better with LD is the lack of mpeg-compression. Otherwise, there's nothing LD can do better than DVD and in there's really no competition. End of story.

The 2006 box set is just a rebadge of the earlier DVDs (the files are dated 2002). Either way, here you have the bitrates for the first film.

The thing is, though, the only reason the color timing was changed was to match the half-assed sequels most people don't even care about.

You forgot the audio quality, the digital audio is pretty much the exact same thing as a red book audio CD.

I don't really like the squeals of Matrix and almost forget about them? The Matrix reloaded/revolutions, I find them boring for low end now. Once you hear too much low end over and over and over again it becomes boring. I'd sooner watch Casablanca on DVD in mono.

I still like the look of it.

So you're saying that DVD cannot do 16-bit/44.1kHz?

It cán, but it doesn't.
BTW, I hate compression... so I hate DVD :P
And yes, HDDVD or Blu Ray have better compression technique than DVD, and generally look way better.
But I can's stand artifacts or macroblocking....
A little noise is no problem for me.

But I'm no holy one... I watch DVD's to ;)
But like CD sucks at audio, DVD sucks at audio and video :P

Go ahead and post them anytime! It's always interesting to see what other's captures look like.

Does anyone here have any requests? I can provide captures from most (if not every) NTSC LD in my collection.

I wouldn't mind seeing caps of that squeezed/anamorphic transfer of T2 and/or Tarzan if its not to much trouble.

There are already some captures from Terminator 2 but if there's something specific you're looking for I can help you with that. Tarzan isn't a problem, I'll get some shots within a day or two. It's an outstanding Laserdisc.

Because the color accuracy is way better on my CRT than a modern LCD and I'm not going to change displays just for my BD player and PS3, especially when the latter doesn't even have any games I care about that exceed 720p.

It's not always about resolution.

Edit: in regards to The Matrix, I have the 10th anniversary BD and it suffers from the modified color timing that plagues most every release after the original VHS, LD and DVD prints.

If the CRT is HD-ready that is 16:9 and big enough, then fair enough, it very well may be better then some LCD and plasma sets, but anything less and I see a lot of wasted resolution regardless of how much better you think the colors might be, which is where Blu-Ray is a giant leap forward over LD and DVD. I'm not saying Blu-Ray won't look better then DVD and Laserdisc even on a normal old 4:3 CRT because it will, but I just don't think you are quite uderlizing the absolute maximum out of the Blu-Ray format or HD in general.

personally I don't even choose to use either of my CRT displays for DVD or Laserdisc (I upscale both DVD and Laser to 1080i on my LCD TV instead), but I do still have a couple of CRTs kicking around, one flatron hooked up to my PS2 in a different room, and the other I keep around for sentimental value.

If your main criteria for quality are size and resolution, then everything you say makes sense. However, if one does not care about size and resolution then they will be more concerned with quality.

The color accuracy of CRT is not in question. There is such a thing as debate, and then there is just willful ignorance and denial disguised as debate. The superior gamut of CRT color isn't just someone's opinion, it's a measured scientific fact. If all your CRTs suck, or if you don't know how to calibrate them, or if you are blind, or if you just care about high nova bright and edgy and poppin' an image is, that's one thing, everyone should watch what they enjoy, but there is no debate here.

Oh yes that's right, I remember those screenshots now. I also remember takou posting both the non-THX and the THX certified squeezed/anamorphic pressings of T2 as well as the MUSE Hi-Vision release over on the 'reviews' section too, so don't worry about T2, but thanks anyway.

Can't wait to check out Tarzan. Being a animation and a late release from 2000 I'm sure it looks outstanding by LD standards.

Matrix DVD (R1 1999) [ISBN 0-7907-4261-6]

Included title 6 because it's different around 80 minute mark. All others appeared identical.

Overall seems this one has slightly higher bitrate and longer runtime vs the copy in your 2006 Trilogy Box set. Noticed film is grainy, but during the fight with Agent in subway, it kinda looks like bitrate gets too low (grain disappears and resembles DNR sometimes)... Whatever  .

Sorry for the delays, but here it is. While colors can be somewhat strong at times I still find it to look terrific. Nearly every scene have some real eye-candy that sticks out (in a good way) and is very well represented here. Audio is great but unfortunately not completely spectacular. It's loud and clear for sure but it could've been more intense.

Plus some examples with the 3D comb filter.

3D comb filter off (notice the rainbowing on Jupiter and in the rings of Saturn)

3D comb filter mid (5/9)

3D Comb filter max

Some more screenshots.

Song of the South (1946) [PILF-1096]
Colors and contrast are a bit off (probably due to sources) but textures are fine with good grain and it moves very good.

The Shining (1980) [11079 A/B]
Awful film but has a really good transfer. Sharpness is excellent and colors are generally good (somewhat red but could be my player). Noise level is quite low, especially for a Warner title from 1991. What a surprise.

And yes I'm quite lazy and mostly do captures from the first side of every film. :P

The same planet where Disney's Tarzan is good, aparently.

I love The Shining! :) I don't see why anybody would call it awful...

That would be my sister, kinda. I was babysitting and saw she had her blu-ray deck connected via HDMI but everything was set at 480i. I went thru and fixed it and when she came back... she saw no difference.

to tell you the truth, my DVD is connected with HDMI to the TV but my roku is connected with HDMI but the roku is set at 480 not 720
as it looks more pixilated in the higher setting for some reason :?

in all honesty I can't tell the difference with the DVD connected to the projector with HDMI or composite :shh:
so i'm fine with it, as long as I get the setting correct with aspect ratio i'm a happy camper

To me it is. I've seen it many times and never ever gotten anything out of it. It's a longwinded and uninteresting that has none of the quality from Kubrick's other films (I mainly appreciate Dr. Strangelove for it's satirical view on the cold war). But then there are a lot of films other people like that I dislike such as La Maman et la Putain, Taxi Driver, Le Mépris, It's a Wonderful Life and Apocalypse Now just to name a few.

But yes I'd much rather see Disney's Tarzan than The Shining.

Unbelievable. You certainly have your own taste in movies. Lol. Most of you can probably tell I'm some what of a horror buff by now (personally like the b-type stuff more).

The Puppet Masters Widescreen LD (ld-717 cellphone screenshot from CRT monitor)

Enjoyed this movie. It has a striking resemblance to "Alien" movies... Reminds me of the "Duke Nukem 3D" video game.

I find LDs from late 80s-1991 in my collection have extremely good picture. No aliasing, no halos or rot. Most LDs in my collection from 1992 onwards have aliasing and halos (Jurassic Park, Twister, Stargate, Die Hard 3, etc); have LD "Sleepless in Seattle" and it has rot.

I wouldn't say so. I collect and watch all kinds of films except for horror, musicals, modern comedy and super hero films (probably feminist propaganda as well).

It all depends on the scaling and comb filtering, my friend's TV is decidedly a low end offbrand model and there's a lot of banding, dot crawl, etc. I'm sure DVD would look OK via composite on our Panasonics

What model Roku do you have? Mine has no problem with 1080, and once the TV size settings are correct it shouldn't be scaling at all.
