I have gotten lazy with this lately. I have Alien, Aliens, Lion King, Options, Sleeping Beauty, Eyes of Fire, and many others that I haven't posted yet. Is anyone interested in seeing those? Aliens looks gorgeous and it's the version of Aliens that is shortened and is missing the Newt extra scenes as well as Ripley finding out about her daughter scene. Alien laserdisc did not rip very well and I felt like it looked better playing directly from the player. Aliens ripped well as well as the animation movies. Options a romantic comedy movie looks better than the VHS rip I found of it online. I compared that with my laserdisc copy and that movie looks much better on laserdisc with the colors. Also, for Friday the 13th I recently streamed the laserdisc of that for a friend online and I stretched the image to proper aspect ratio. I do not know why Friday the 13th laserdisc has an incorrect aspect ratio. I am guessing they tried to fit more of the picture in it but it's a bit annoying. Either way that movie has a pretty nice picture and would have been perfect if it wasn't squished. |

So instead of using the Akira 4K thread, I think we can have a look at the two Japanese Laserdiscs of Nausikaä here. I brought both of them to my studio for digitizing. Player in use is the Pioneer CLD-D604 and recording was done in native resolution, encoded in ProRes 422HQ. And yes, I call it Nausikaä since ä is indeed an actual character letter in my native language. ![]() ![]() For comparison to DVDs and Blu-Rays you can have a look at Caps-A-Holic. For those of you who don't know, Nausicaä [98LX-1] was originally released on LD in 1984. The master was done from a 35mm print with high contrast and cue marks. Aspect ratio is around 1.74:1 but the masking position differs somewhat from scene to scene. Black level is at 7.5IRE, which have not been compansated for in the screenshots below. The image leans towards an overly bright image with a clear tone of red and magenta. Comparably speaking the shadow details are lacking which is most likely due to the source used. Not in any way bad for a Laserdisc of this age and noise levels are overall fairly low. One scene in particular caught my attention, as there was a white flash on screen which even made the black bars turn white. Will have to look at it once more to see if it's done during telecine or essentially baked into the source elements. Audio is analog mono only. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As a part of the Ghibli Ga Ippai Collection (1996) [TKLO-50180], Nausicaä saw a second release on Laserdisc in Japan. This appears to be done using a duplicate positive as source, and it shows. Colors appear more balanced and overall gamma is much more pleasing. Shadow details are clear and present without any distracting lifting or crushing (especially visible on the two last screenshots). It's a tad darker than the former Laserdisc but it's all fine to my eyes, especially with those reddish whites being gone. Chroma noise is however more apparent, and the sharper image may result in more apparent rainbowing artifacts depending on the system. Blacks are kept at 0IRE. A very fine upgrade overall, but audio is still analog mono only. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks nissling. I thought that for a 1984 pressed LD the picture quality was rather good. It was among the first Japanese LDs that I got from a collection purchased around 2005 or '06. Cheers |

Even more looking forward to watching my Ippai edition now Nissling, thanks for the post. Do you know if the audio on the film was mono in theatres? |

According to IMDb the film was originally mixed and released in Dolby Stereo. There doesn't seem to be any release of the film containing any more sound channels than 2.0, but I cannot find any information if any of them are just dual mono or actually in stereo. The Scandinavian Blu-Ray states on the back that it's encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1 but I'm sure it's just a typo. Will check that soon. |

Every single version of the movie I’ve seen is mono. There was talk of making a 5.1 but they listened to what they had and gave up. I have the “drama” LP which isn’t actually a drama, just an audio-only version of the movie and it IS stereo but not profusely. That drama album came out after the theatrical and home video versions of the movie so if they wanted to use it in the movie they could. All the music on the soundtracks is stereo. The Wind Rises was in mono in 2013. I suppose it’s possible that it was stereo in the theater and they lost that soundtrack INSTANTLY and could never make a good one with what’s left...but I doubt it. They basically bought the studio that make the Nausicaa (Topcraft) and thats what became Ghibli and that stereo drama record was made later... Confusing, for sure, but I think the short answer is “it’s mono forever” and I’ve learned to respect this particular creator’s choices. Thanks very much for the comparison shots. EDIT: while I don’t know for sure if Nausicaa was mono on release I do know that Laputa was the first in Dolby because that was mentioned in Starting Point. Nausicaa being 2.0 would be strange since virtually everything in the 80s was Dolby Stereo or mono. |

Amazing at those Disney shots, the LD was actually changed and the DVD wasn't. Notice the boxes, ritz, lorna doone, milk bone etc. |
