Just remember...that wasn't an LD shot (obviously); it was just there to serve as a reference of what the panel could do when fed a 1080i signal (well, processed to 1080p by the Onkyo) I chose it...because...well...I was getting ready to watch an episode. Stop-motion animation is really interesting in HD.

I like the output on that Sony. There are times that; if it wasn't for the fact I needed HDMI and my shelving system can't support a big CRT due to weight; I'd run out to Goodwill and buy one.

Pioneer CLD-704 into a Sony RDR-GX300 DVD Recorder and then component video into the Sony KV-34XBR910 CRT display.

You been saying that for the past 2 weeks now.

I got some leads today so I'll try that "faces" ABCDE comparison test later in day.

I'd like to take some screenshots, but since my HT monitor is a Direct View CRT, it probably won't look all that good because of the refresh rate.

If your camera has shutter settings, 1/60th second should. Allow you to capture both fields with no issue. Most cameras that are automatic don't do a horrible job. Flicker is a larger issue with video than a still shot.

I've got some photos from the 80s my father took off the TV of the shuttle lifting off; and they looked good. I remember him telling me the shutter speed was important in tha shot.

While my LCD didn't have flicker; faster than 1/60th caused blur.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, all my shots are from a CRT and they look fine. I don't recommend taking pictures of stills though since stills on LD are never as good as moving video. You either have the half-frame thing going on with CAV discs or the horrendous jaggies from the digital frame buffer. I suppose if you paused a CAV disc during a period where there was zero movement on the screen you would get a great picture, but not so much during action.

I'm going to post some more pics later with more details of how I got my shots.

That's a very obvious paused picture...in fact, the only difference from the ones I posted in the thread is the display indicator is on the screen. I didn't notice any half-framing or ugly picture jumping like I do when running it directly in to the thingTV. Besides; one rotation is two fields; that's an entire frame. The picture I get when paused is just as sharp and clear as when it's playing. In fact; I notice a slight quality difference between CAV discs and CLV discs with the Onkyo.

Although, it did just occur to me that perhaps what you're talking about are the frames that, during telecine, changes frames between fields.

Yeah I've noticed that even with well pressed discs on my LCD too. Pausing the image isn't any where near as rock solid in stability or as good looking in detail then it is in motion. Its as though all the sharpness, clarity and colours etc are all resurrected as soon as you hit that play button..

No. What I'm talking about happens on most people's TVs, just not yours. Your receiver is making better sense of a single CAV frame than my TV does. :)

Yeah, I honestly have no idea how it does it; but it has to be the single biggest improvement for watching discs. Ill go home tonight; hook the player directly in to the TV and let you guys feast on how bad it does. Usually with stills; especially with video content; you get that odd rapid two-field jumping.

Post subject:  Re: The Laserdisc Screenshot Thread

So I hooked the 505 directly in to the LCD and attempted to take pictures.

Fail!

It failed because none of the defects showed up. I highly suspect right now that my cameras auto stabilization is doing strange things. While my screenshots earlier looked pretty much like my TV; they may be flawed because of it.

The biggest issue was trying to capture CAV stills. They *do* look bad; and I think. Its the same thing other people are talking about. I didn't really notice a loss of resoljtion..because the picture wouldn't stay still. It would jump, ever so slightly. Without a tripod; I think my camera compensates for it; thinking its camera shake.

It appears, to be, this is just average deinterlacing. Two film fields should match, but be half resolution. There is the fact the fields are offset slightly...and THIS is what I think we're seeing. The deinterlacing circuits are either bobbing or something odd. So both fields are being shown in rapid succession..mostly because the TV doesn't know its a still...its just processing the signal.

Now, if you're getting half resolution on CAV stills, its likely because the Tv detects the same two fields and just discards one; scaling it up. In fact; the early digital memory looks like it just stores a single field.

So, my Onkyo apparently is able to detect these offset fields and stabilze them; giving you a full resolution still. This works on film...I have *not* tried it on video content; in which you'd have a larger change between fields. The only disc I know of with video content on CAV is the Soderburgh interview on my Criterion sex, lies and videotape. It was filmed on Hi-8; and I suspect its a straight video transfer. I know it was the first still on CAV I looked at, and the jumping was MUCH more. Noticable. I have no idea how the onkyo will handle that.

When I get a tripod; Ill disable my stable-shot and see if I can't get some jumpy stills; ands ee if it changes the quality of my screenshots. That's gotta wait till the weekend when I get some money go go out and buy a tripod.

Post subject:  Re: The Laserdisc Screenshot Thread

I dont really think pictures or video captures (Done with cameras) really show how a laserdisc look like, they usually look better on camera pictures than in reality =) but, i thought i include some screen captures of the ultimate oz laserdisc. These have been captured through a blackmagic intensity hd without any form of compression and stored in uncompressed bmp:s. But, I did forget to deinterlace them, so some interlacing artifacts are present :/ trying to find my screen grabs of terminator 2 squeeze as well. I used a hld-x9 for playback.
