i don't have the Japanese fifth element, but i want it. also that copy of T2 above is amazing, i don't think i've seen that before.

i also really like the Criterion James Bond covers. they just seem to fit those movies so well.

I'm, once again, so far away from majority with my opinions...

Not that those sleeves people have listed in this topic would be bad, quite a lot of cool ones among them, but I absolutely love these japanese designs with certain "cut-and-paste" feel.

Japanese LaserDisc covers also use color and contrast in a brilliant way that the vast majority of American discs do not.

Just won these off of YJA . . .

. . . those are the Samurai Spirits ("Samurai Shodown" here in the US) OAVs from 1998. Anyone know of any other 2 covers that make up one image (non-gatefold)?

anyone else notice how a lot of artwork was done so that they didn't have to alter anything for the VHS cover? perfect example- disney's Hercules. The only thing outside of the center is just the clouds and the sky. the appeal of LD is the great cover artwork and I always feel jipped when they just transfer the VHS cover over or make a small box with the artwork in it and leave the rest as a solid color

Actually I always keep 2 or 3 LD up on a shelve as an art display.

Some are so beautiful:

Hana-Bi (1997) [BELL-1236]
Atlantis (1991) [PILH-1003]
DTS Experience (1998) [PILW-1258]
H.R. Giger: Alien (1979) [78LS-13]
Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) (1997) [TKLA-50300]

Most of the Criterions.

Let's revive this topic, I'd love to see more of these. Anyone have any awesome cover artwork?

This is my favorite from what I own:

This is a great thread.

Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso) (1992) [TKLO-50090]

I left the obi out since in this case it massively distracts from the design.

Artwork on DVD and Bluray is like looking at cheap magazine. Looking at the artwork of Laserdisc is like going to picture gallery to see real art. :)

I like the TOP GUN one with the embossed lettering.

Romancing the Stone, swinging though the jungle.

m

and The Jewel of the Nile with similar theme to the first one.

The quality of cover art is one aspect in which LD will always be superior to DVD/Blu-Ray. I've heard a similar argument to vinyl vs. CD.

I personally love the Disney box sets for artwork. My favorites being

The Lion King and Sleeping Beauty. The Criterion Robocop is also up there for me.
