No other affordable furniture is durable enough to hold LDs. Affordable is the keyword: there are actually some very nice storage systems out there (thanks to vinyl collectors) but they are pretty expensive. This all metal Boltz rack is quite stylish (and obviously strong enough for laserdiscs) but is a pricey $449:

Once you get used to buying real grown up furniture, $450 is actually nothing, sadly. Luckily my girlfriend pays for all that crap. I like the castors and the fact that its metal, but I'd rather have things less wide. You're going to need some heavy duty stoppers any rows that aren't completely full. Also, I don't like how the records/LDs will be resting against the edge of metal at the front and back. What's up with that? Also, it looks like 300-400 LDs max, maybe 600 LPs. The more I look at it, the less I like it. The best things for media are the most plain. Whatever is strong, modular, and capable of holding as many units as possible. I'd need 2 or 3 of those for all my crap.

The more I look at it, the less I like it. Yeah, the Boltz rack looks like it does have some issues. The design of the edges is odd, it looks like you would need some spacers to protect the contents (an issue that should be worked out on a high end rack). Too bad there are not more metal shelves like this on the market: a perfected version would be quite nice (I would make it slightly deeper too, for the LD market, to accommodate bigger box sets) . These things are expandable though, which is one good idea, and here is what it looks like with an expansion shelf (heavy!): I'm a real cheapskate when it comes to storage: I have been using the floor of a spare room as one big shelf (I'm the only one who goes in there, so no chance of anyone walking into anything. Here is an "interesting" approach to LD storage used by a Japanese collector that I found browsing Google images (more pix here: http://seijinn.asablo.jp/blog/cat/books/). Here we see a "hybrid" approach: shelves in the back (note the Urusei Yatsura LD50 box and MI LD24 on the shelf - a collector with good taste in laserdiscs ), and LDs on the floor too. A real otaku den, in any event :

You need some real shelves, man. Standing LDs on top of other LDs...never in my poorest of poor times did I ever do that. Looking at the Ikea Expidit series, this really looks like the way to go. Somehow I missed this at the store. Everything I saw had smaller cubes, but clearly 12"s fit in just fine. It looks too small for many box sets, but perfect for everything else. I'm a little worried about Ikea's stated 13kg per shelf limit though. With this kind of furniture you don't want to be anywhere near a weight limit since the shelves are going to sag over time as it is and 13kg...is not a lot of LDs.

I used the Flarke bookcase (when I had 4 at the time saved the one in a pic in a recent move). I wonder if Kilby is of the same quality the Flarke is. I would get the Expedit since my brother who was maybe still is a DJ used them for records but I don't have the space for it. So if I do go to ikea it would be for getting a Lerberg. I've had one before and loved it but I had to get rid of it moving. though I might end up getting this lerberg though since it might hold more. I've used them for LDs before. EDIT: redid it so it works f now I guess

You have plenty of room for several different versions of the Expidit in that room, you just need to toss some of that other stuff. They come in all sorts of configurations. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categ ... ies/09064/Some of that stuff in the picture is so precariously balanced. How is that row with Star Wars and Dune even staying there? The Force? You have three rows of (what looks like) VHS stacked on top of itself. Trust me, having nice shelves is worth the money and effort. You don't have to worry about stuff falling all over the place. Even dust is less of a problem.

I will figure out something when I get the KOR stuff. DVDs are in the drawers of the dresser btw. I don't have space to put the dresser elsewhere since on the other side is the computer workstation. Once I get a job and free to go to the closets ikea which is in another state I'll defintly get some expedit shelves

I've always been fascinated by these kind of people hoarding tons of stuff in small, messy looking rooms occupied by those "mountains of electronics". Reminds me of an old friend who used to live like this in his basement for several years. Whenever I came in there were these huge piles of old tvs and stuff he was hoarding because he thought he would be able to fix them. Of course his attempts to repair the stuff didn't work out so these piles were steadily "growing" until you had problems opening the door to the apartment...

redid for the last time except I'll add to it with KOR tomorrow since I have to pick it up at the Post Office and about 3 more LDs coming. I've changed what I did. I added some wood to several spots to make it more sturdy to put things on as you can see:

Look into office furniture believe it or not. I have found many office bookcase style shelves to be a perfect fit for LDs. They often have a nice height so that you can put your favs on top. Either that or good old milk crates which can hold a lot. They also look great lined up and you can get them in different colors at Staples. Personally I just go with black but creativity doesn't hurt.
