Post subject:  What do you do with Orphaned Discs?

Hidden away in one of the boxes in my latest haul I found the first disc of a two disc PAL version of In the Line of Fire. I've contacted the seller and he didn't realise it was there but doesn't want me to return it so now I'm left wondering what to do with it.

I don't want to simply throw it away or turn it into a clock or such as it is a perfectly functional disc and no matter how slim my chances are of finding someone just searching for that one disc I can't find it in myself to take something functional and break it.

With some of you having collections that go into the quadrupedal figures I'm sure I'm not the only one stuck with an orphaned disc. What do you do with them?

I got rid of mine (luckily only one, Immortal Beloved) on ebay that I put as a ridiculous low price with free shipping.. it was like a penny or something and someone took it.

I saved the non-rotted platter out of a copy of Starship Troopers to serve as a test disc. It's CAV on one side, CLV on the other, so it can be used to verify that side change, motor, & tracking on a player are all OK, & if the player is seriously defective & damages the disc, I haven't really lost anything.

I've also got one random disc of Urotsukidoji that was substituted for one of the two discs in one of the Tenchi TV series mini-boxsets in a lot someone traded me. (I knew about it before hand.) Not sure what I'll do with that.

I do the same now after experiencing a major mishap with one of the used laserdisc players I bought. It scratched a concentric groove all the way round the disc surface of a valuable music LD I owned. I was able to repair the disc using Novus polish however it certainly reminded me of the perils of putting your favourite discs in an untested player!

Thank you for the life lesson. I've never really considered that an untested player could seriously damage a disc.

I had a loose copy of speed 2 come with a player I bought, so I've actually stuffed it into the jacket of a copy of speed and intend to sell it as part of a few discs that I'm looking to part with.

I also have a barely-working player (Pioneer LD-700, got for free off the A/V guy at a local university because it had a disc stuck in it) which I use to test suspicious discs.

I've been hoping for an orphaned disc 1 of Goldeneye DTS to pop up on Ebay someday. I bought the movie off of Ebay some years ago, but it arrived with disc 1 cracked. Seller gave me a refund and said I didn't have to send it back (just wanted to get rid of it, I suppose?)

Fat chance of that happening, I suppose . . .

Trade it with another collector ;)

I suppose you could raffle it off at one of your A-kon shows.

I've only got the first disc of The Mask (CAV Special edition) so what I'll do is buy another copy of the same film to complete the set due to the second disc getting broken by my brother.

I have a CAV copy of "Star Wars" (Pan & Scan) that is missing Disc 1. I've held onto it for years thinking someone might need a Disc 2 or 3, but that hasn't happened.

We should start a Swap Meet thread. Those willing to trade discs to complete a set or exchange your extra copies altogether for another title someone else wants to part with. Each person pays and ships the disc to the other with no other cost. (For that matter an in person LD swap meet would be really cool. Imagine finding that rare copy you've been looking for, you can even look it over and inspect it before you buy. LDs, players, parts, oh my . . .)

"Star Wars" cropped! That is a perfect excuse to fire your shotgun!

I like the general idea of swapping and no money changes hands. This was something I started with a number of music fans worldwide and it was very successful. You might think there would be a dilemma where one person thinks a particular disc they have is worth far more than the swap being offered. Music collectors know the score and we based everything for swaps on comparable wishlists so I never felt disappointed.

I didn't mind if the person I was swapping with had picked up a LD for 0.99 USD - the important thing was I got the title I wanted. If there were any doubts about condition - some pics were sent before the swap was agreed. This was hugely successful at filling the gaps in my collection and I still do swaps to this day. I'd much rather own a title on my wishlist than have a duplicate that I never use.

This sounds like a perfect application for LDDB to me. Just put the title up for sale for a pittance and say in the description that disc 2 is missing or damaged or whatever and maybe one day there will be a match.

I have one such for sale myself: Age of Innocence, The (1993) [PAL/LBX] [LD 14626]

Just did it with a batman title, had a nice jacket and no disc.

It works because this is a collector site.
I sold a Toyah LD that was cracked but had a nice cover on LDDB.com as it was a rare title still.

Currently I have a mint quality jacket for Pi, but the disc was cracked in freight. I've been debating if I should advertise the cover or see if anyone has an orphaned disc to part with.
