I do not have access to these releases, so these are based on internet info alone:

-1979 Dracula: Director muted colours for the DVD release

-Cruising (1980): DVD supposedly had strong blue tinting to disguise the rough state of surviving film source.

Braindead (1992) (Uncut) [PILF-1822]: there are various versions of this movie on LD (also known in the US as "Dead Alive"), and this version is interesting because it has a few scenes that are not in any of the US versions, including the widescreen DVD version. This version, alas, is not widescreen. It looks like there might be a German PAL version that is both widescreen/uncut, but I can't vouch for it.

Also noticed Terminator 2 Special Edition widescreen edition (unrated one with black cover and red heading) looks very decent; has THX intro I believe and colors are very nice. Someone in different thread showed intro having white crush and wrong colors in other releases.

If they haven't been mentioned before – Moontrap (1989) (Uncut) [SWLD-3033] West Cape Corporation, Japan Japanese release of this sci-fi film has a unique, longer edit than the R rated US version. Kuraishisu 2050 (Solar Crisis) (1990) [PCLP-00128] Pony Canyon, Japan Released in an altered/cut version directed by "Alan Smithee" everywhere in the world. Japanese LD has a longer and different version and is NOT an "Alan Smithee" film; in the credits, the director's real name (Richard C. Sarafian) does appear. Enemy Mine - Geliebter Feind (1985) (Uncut) [1492-05] Fox Video, Germany The german edit of the film is slightly longer than the "international" cut sold on DVD worldwide; the German laserdisc of the film has the longer edit in letterboxed format (OAR). Old German VHS also had the longer edit but a terrible pan & scan picture.

Criterion Laserdisc has commentary / making-of featurette, but apparently there's a rare earlier version with slightly different bonus content. -For the Boys (1991): The Laserdisc has deleted scenes and the director's introduction to them. -House of the Long Shadows(1983): This has suffered terribly on home video. The MGM DVD was so dark whole scenes were just blackscreen, even with brightness / contrast adjusted to maximum. The 2012 release lovingly put together by Final Cut fared much, much better, but colours are a bit off and it's widescreen. The original UK release on laserdisc is probably the best to be had.

I had heard about the '79 Dracula. Recently I finally sat down and watched Cruising which is a nearly incoherent mess. The timing really stuck out as did the 5.1 mix which had some obvious new foley work. The end credits list a new transfer was done in 2007 with remix and re-timing. The new timing is beyond blatant and sticks out like a sore thumb. So one must obtain the uncut Japanese LD for a full frame version with PCM mono.

I'm surprised no mention has been said of the Tom And Jerry box sets which contain banned cartoons as well as the Looney Tunes box sets which contain a few banned cartoons. Especially with the ongoing Tom and Jerry Volume 2 blu-ray fiasco.............

Braindead was released as couple of alternate edits and japan and german LD's are sourced from international version, which is longest, while AFAIK all US releases regardless of format contain shorter US unrated print. However the japan press is edited to show one short scene in polarized colors for unknown reason while both german discs are untouched, too bad that despite the OAR they fall short to japanese one a big time what comes to picture quality in general. Also, the movie is available almost everywhere except in US as proper DVD, so this particular disc ain't anything unique and doesn't really belong to this list.

Seems to me that the Criterion section ("Chapter 7", 4th post) is missing a LOT of titles. (Or maybe the OP knows it's incomplete, and only got through entering the titles through spine 45 so far...)

CAV is so expensive and the bonus resolution is so small........anyone like me would go always for the CLV version ?

Pretty sure At Play in the Fields of the Lord has never made it past LD and VHS. Not sure if the point is to single out releases that are not on DVD or BD.

I have a couple of quick notes to make... 200 Motels is listed as not being on DVD. It actually is available (or at least was), albeit with some small edits as well as a distorted widescreen aspect ratio, so the LD still remains the best-quality official release (athough there are bootleg DVDs sourced from high-definition broadcasts): http://sotcaa.org/editnews/200-Motels-On-DVD.html Also, I don't recall seeing Criterion's edition of Orson Welles' Othello on the list. The LD release is the only one to date which contains the 1955 edit of the film without a 'corrected' soundtrack (which, at least in the Image DVD edition, corrected several lines of dialogue by removing them). Although it is rumored that Criterion's forthcoming BD of Othello will feature the 1955 edition as well as the 'restoration', I'm not personally going to hold my breath on that one.

I was just doing some reading and aparently the anime adaptations of Lensman have been OOP for ages. The U.S. LD of the movie was probably the last time it was released anywhere. There was a movie and a TV series, neither hit DVD in any region. The company most likely to put it out these days is probably Discotek Media, and while they have pulled a few amazing releases out of nowhere (Robot Carnival, finally) this one seems unlikely for now since the E.E. Doc Smith estate hated these adaptions and, aparently, didn't even sign off on the multiple home video releases of the movie in the U.S. in the 80s and 90s. I agree that the movie has basically nothing to do with the books, but it's a movie I enjoy and it's an important part of anime history. So because of these factors I'm submitting these for the list, not just because it's OOP 80s anime. There is a ton of OOP 80s anime. This would have come out by now from somebody somewhere if not for rights issues.
