Several years ago I saw a listing on the local craigslist for 400 laserdiscs for $100. The seller had listed about 50 titles and and just by those I knew I couldn't lose.

I drove up there (I have a Jeep Liberty) and took a few boxes and record crates figuring I would have enough room.

I get there and it is obvious that there were many more than 400 - it was just shy of 900 when I counted them later. I wound up keeping about half for my collection (a surprising high percentage considering i had a really large collection even back then). There was still a lot of good stuff left over that I either didn't want or already had - and I wound up selling the rest in various places to make a really handsome profit.

To add icing to the cake, after we got the Jeep loaded (everything just barely fit because I didn't have enough containers and he had them stored loose) he hands me an Elite player (with remote) and says you may as well take this too.

I don't have much to come with right now, but a friend to me on Sega-16 found a near mint HLD-X9 at a local craigslist for $150. I can't imagine who the seller could've been...

Got in touch with this one guy on an anime-related forum who was looking to get rid of his LDs and player.

Sold me a CLD-D605 for $40
And a bunch of his Laserdiscs for $5, box sets for $10.

Picked up several DTS titles and as far as box sets, got this late release, import Tenchi Muyo box set: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/30873/PIL ... h-ki-(1992)

And this Godfather box: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/21451/LV1 ... 1980-(1992)

Gave the D605 to my parents.

Another good deal I got was on a player, not so much the discs. Got a Runco LJR-II (with original box, manual and remote) for $300 with 50 discs. Decided to sell the player on Ebay and got $1000 for it.

Probably the best deal I ever gotten were 6 Columbia Video Disc 8in Karaoke discs for about $4.

Probably all of these discs:

Plus 9 more common discs and a demodulator for $180.

Second would be my animation score of 40 or so titles, including all 5 Looney Tunes sets, #5 still sealed, for $40

Last would be the over 400 discs I bought a few weeks ago plus 2 players for $75

"DTS Demo #1 Laserdisc", given for free with a lot of demo LDs because the owner had no clue what it was.

Replied to a craigslist freebie add for 200 discs.
The guy had been trying to sell the discs for months with no success.
I emailed asking if the discs were still available and was told to come get them.
The bonus was the Cld-D701 that he gave me also because of a sticking door ;)

Bought a set of five "adult" anime discs from an eBay seller. It was a full set of the Lolita series, the first hentai OVAs; not my cup of tea, but it was interesting for the historical perspective (and to pad out my sub-collection of adult LDs), and the price was reasonable, something like $20 for six discs. Free shipping, too!

The seller messaged me and told me he'd include a few extra discs as thanks for purchasing... when I got the package, there were 25 discs. The six Lolita discs... and nine Cream Lemon/New Cream Lemon discs, many of which are different sleeves/numbers than what's listed on LDDB. And ten other random live action adult discs from HK and the US. Still $20 and free shipping. I'm guessing the seller had a girlfriend/wife who wanted the stuff out of the house. Funny thing was, I'd been on the hunt for Cream Lemon for ages, and would have dropped a ton more money on the guy's head had those been the ones in his listing.

back when i first got into LD collecting, 'round 2007ish, my first LDs were from this privately run specialty video store
that is now long-defunct, that was running a 75% sale to unload their LD stocks.
built the foundation of my collection on the resultant $1/2.00 single discs, $5/8.00 box sets
and the extra discounts the store owner gave me for buying in the volume that i was.

perhaps a year or two later, i came across a CL ad for around 100 Anime LDs and a CLD-S104 less remote/manual for $80,
and i was all over it like white on rice. in all i've probably around 150/175 LDs so far, around $140 invested,
minus the handful of titles i'vs acquired online for around $10/$20shipped per...

I was at Half Price Books about five years ago and there was a crate of about 100 laserdiscs for $1 apiece. I figured I'd find a few interesting titles, but I started flipping through and every single disc was either a music ld, criterion, cinemadisc foreign, or obscure disc that was never released on DVD like The Wild Life. I nearly dropped a load in my pants. The kicker is that I asked to see a manager and told him that these were way overpriced and I offered to take them all for $50. He said no problem and that he was glad to see them go.

I designed and installed high-end audio systems in NYC in the '80s and then again from 2000-2006...loads of my clients were dumping their players and collections to me as tips after I did their upgrades or new installations, and I grabbed a few from my office just before (or just after) they hit the dumpster. I've gotten at least a dozen players for free (almost all Pioneer, and at least half of them DVLs), and a few more here & there tossed in with the few discs I've actually bought. Some AC3 demodulators, too.

The vast majority of my discs came to me free, and a good half of them still sealed. I've bought a few since that I specifically wanted (mostly music discs).

I went to Goodwill once and found 10 LDs in the record bin. I asked a clerk how much they were and, with a very smart alec tone of voice, he said, "Sir. Those are records. They're $1 a piece." And he walked away. I decided to take my chance and grabbed them all. I made him wait on me. He looked at one (It was The Natural) and noticed the MCA/Universal Home Video logo. He held it up to his manager and asked how much he should charge. She looked at him and said, "A dollar." He points to the logo and she said, "Bill. those are records. You put them on a little turn table and put a needle on them to play."
I said, "Yeah. Duh, Bill" and paid my ten bucks and left. Feeling really good about the whole thing.

Until I noticed the sign that said the next day was 50% off everything.

Wow....
Really love these stories !

Where I live it is no secret in this rural farming community that there is a "guy" who collects and sells LaserDiscs.
Not long after I joined the LDDB I walked out on my porch one afternoon, lo and behold a milk crate full of like 20 plus titles where just "there" ............
Many of them were in junkie condition with housing insulation stuck to the jackets but there were three or four titles that I did not have in my collection and that made it to the shelves.
It hurt at the time but I threw most of the lot away..........
Nick of time is the only one I recall at this point from the ones that stayed with me.
Very nice gesture to be sure, and to this day I still do not know who the good samaritan was that left the precious lot .......

Best deal I ever got - a lot just dumped on my porch !!!!!

I got my Maison Ikkoku 24 disc box set on eBay for $50 a few years ago from the original owner in the USA who imported it back in the day, and it is nice to buy what was once a $1500 set for so little. I can't even remember the last MI LD24 to show up on eBay before mine, and shipping these things from Japan is brutal ($$$) so I was very pleased with this score :).
