I was just updating my discs and noticed "The Undefeated" 1056-85 is 60:04 on one side and 60:03 on the other, If 60 minutes wasn't the absolute max useable time, what was?

There is supposed to be a "CAA-75" mode (as well as a "CAA-45" mode) possible on NTSC LD, but I've never encountered it. Beyond that, of course, PAL sides can be 4% longer. I still don't know why Philips didn't bump the inner radius out a little, reducing the play time to 30/60 minutes per side & raising the video carrier frequency. Not only would that have yielded more bandwidth for the video signal, it might have (although of course they didn't think of this until later) allowed compatibility between analog & digital soundtracks, as with NTSC discs.

I think the longest I've seen is the first side of the PAL release of the Abyss Special Edition which is 61:26. I'm sure I've seen a longer one but I can't remember what, will post if I remember.

I cannot tell which disc it was, but wasn't the world record for PAL CLV closer to 70 minutes, or even 71 minutes?
I could swear twin peaks german pal side 2 was over 65 minutes...
Def. a question for PAL collectors.

Blade (1998) [PILF-7399]

Had a pretty long Side A as well.

Side A of the UK PAL release of Hard Boiled is apparently 63:43 in length!

Well, I do know that one of the longest CAV sides ever produced was on the MCA DiscoVision release of Bonzai.

I couldn't swear to it being the longest side, but "World at War: Bonzai" is very long at 29:32 running 42,550 tagged frames (frame counters don't run during the bumpers).

Pioneer did have CAA65 and CAA70 encodes for NTSC Extended play discs. The aforementioned Japan edition of "Blade" use CAA65 for side 1. I knew of only 2 titles that used CAA65 and none that ever used CAA70. There was also a CAA45 which was never used by Pioneer in the US that I am aware of. WEA often used CAA45.

Typically, if any side had a running time of 55:05 or less, it was encoded in CAA55. Between 55:06 and 60:05 would get CAA60 encoding. This was true for Pioneer US and Japan and for Mitsubishi and Kurray in Japan.

The maximum for a CAA60 disc is 60 minutes and 5 seconds, so that's probably what the disc is, although Pioneer did develop the CAA65 (65 minutes and 5 seconds max.), but I don't know how many of those were made. Pioneer also developed the CAA70 (70 minutes max.) but I've never run across one of those.

Pioneer and many other disc manufacturers switched from CLV to CAA, although they identified CAA discs as CLV on packaging. CAA was an improvement over CLV in that it greatly reduced video crosstalk. The one manufacturer that actually continued using CLV was 3M. Their disc replicating process eliminated the crosstalk problem so there was no need for them to make the switch. If I remember correctly Technidisc didn't use CAAs either, using software to eliminate crosstalk.

STAY AWESOME! :)

I just wanted to ask the same question because I watch Scream 2 (1997) [13553 AS] yesterday. It's on three sides and added together 120 minutes and 50 seconds long. So I guess they couldn't fit it on one disc.

Is there a way to see if a disc is CAA60 or CAA55?

What is the longest running time for CAV discs (NTSC and PAL)? blam1 mentioned 29:32. So 30 minutes isn't possible?

What about 20cm LDs? I have a few NTSC discs which are about 14 minutes for CAV and 19 minutes for CLV.

Also, was it more expensive to master a CAV disc compared to a CLV disc? They are so many movies were it would have been possible to make at least one side CAV.

I'm guessing it cost more to master a CAV disc. I remember Software Sculptors anime releases were puzzlingly released with 2 episodes per LD, but all on one CLV side rather than an episode per side in CAV.

That never made any sense to me, unless it cost more to make the releases in CAV.

A CAV side is cheaper to master than a CLV side, because it takes less time on the equipment. Mastering has to be done in real time, after all. But each side is quite expensive, so one CLV side is still much less costly than two CAV sides.

CAV discs were less expensive to master. Once mastering was done, replication costs were the same. That is why studios started doing short-side CAV titles. Interestingly, Japan releases did not follow this same practice. I once had a discussion on the matter with MCA/Universal and they always tried to do CAV on the last side, unless the side-breaks didn't meet with filmmaker approval.

For 8" discs, the limites are 14 minutes in CAV and 20 minutes in CLV.

As for CAA55 versus CAA60, if you look at the inner bands of the side, there is a section that is clearly CAV. If that section is about 1/2" wide, the title is CAA55. If it is about 1/8" wide, it is CAA60. I would have to pull out a CAA65 disc (which I don't have handy) to give a real comparison between CAA60 and CAA65.

It could well be that it was less expensive to make one CLV (or CAA) disc than to make two CAVs discs. If that's the case it makes more economical sense to release an anime title as a single-sided CLV (or CAA) disc than two CAV sides.

I pulled out the Japanese edition of "Blade" tonight. Both sides are encoded in CAA65, with Side A running 60:50 and Side B running 60:10.

Perhaps you could submit that as an update to the LDDb listing for this release.

Just watched New Nightmare last night. Side A was right around 60:01 which was the most I've seen for a US release.

I believe the maximum duration possible on a CAA60 was 60:05, so it might be that side 1 was in fact on a CAA60.
