Willow (1988) [EE 1009]

WILLOW (1988)

PAL laserdisc only clocking in at 60m.11s on side 1 and 61m. 55s on side 2. SNEAKERS clocks in the highest so far for a PAL pressing that I have.

I pulled out the Japanese edition of "Blade" tonight. Both sides are encoded in CAA65, with Side A running 60:50 and Side B running 60:10.

Perhaps you could submit that as an update to the LDDb listing for this release.

STAY AWESOME! :)

cessnaace,

Your saying we should all go though our LD collection at rocket speeds and put all the max running time of each side into database. That would take months/years  depending on each collector massive LD collection.

Alive/Alive: 20 Years Later (1993) [PLFEC 31731]

ALIVE side 1 clocked in at around 64m.10s with slow fade to black 64m.11s and auto switching over to side B that doesn't clock in highest as side 1.

Do you mean 64 mins or 63? The screenshots show 63. If it's 64 then I think Alive steals the crown from Star Trek: The Pilots [PLTES 34071] disc 1, side 1 (63:55)

The shot of sneakers you posted at 63:54 looks like the credits are still going. Were there a couple more seconds on there or did the disc end with that still on screen?

Hooray for editing the post. Well it was late in the morning I was doing this. 63.11 on ALIVE so SNEAKERS clocks in a 63m.54s. No more seconds left on the end credits of SNEAKERS, it said "END" as it usually does say when a laserdisc reaches the end.

By the way, I used to own the PAL pressing of THE ABYSS but sold it around the early 2000's for the PAL DVD. Also there was a noise buzz or hum on of Lt or Rt tracks forget which but I guess it was right channel?

Playing HEAT but the 3 CLV sides don't clock in any higher than BLADE even though HEAT 171 mins.

I remember the PAL Abyss LD having some pretty long sides but none of them were record breakers.

I guess the longest side on any disc I have is this one . . .

Pleasure Dome 1: The Genesis Chamber (1994) [Z0422]

. . . side A clocks in at 60:03.

I won't have it for long though. Just sold it on Ebay.

Dorado, El (1988) [VD2 CB 01 13]

Each side should be at least 131/2=65.5 minutes...

Would be interesting if anyone could confirm. Would finally beat Star Trek: The Pilots [PLTES 34071]

Side A: 57:30
Side B: 59:44
Have just watched the player display - actually not connected to a TV - so can't say which is the film lenght, but should be around 116m - while the original time was 149m: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095053

*spooky thread-necromancy sounds go here*

from https://web.archive.org/web/20000309122 ... 37,00.html:

Quote:
What's the maximum time I can record on a Laser Videodisc ?

On a CAV recording the absolute maximum is 35:42 for a CAV and 63:39 for CLV. What has to be done to fit the longer programs on the disc is reduce the space between the rows (tracks). This of course makes the disc susceptible to assorted problems most notably crosstalk. We have done many discs for customers with extended, non-standard, program lengths. All have been the CAV format, and so far all have been fine. Nonetheless, all non-standard discs come with the same "take as is" caveat. Further, CAV recordings greater than 31:15 (56,250 frames) and CLV recordings greater than 61:00 would be done as "factory experiments" with associated delays.

(Imation only handled NTSC, BTW, and stuck with pure-CLV, not CAA)

Cool link. Thanks for sharing! It's always fun to look at older websites, especially those from the 90s.

It's interesting to see that the page is from 1999, and that they were still promoting and pressing custom discs. I would have thought by then it would have died out with DVD on the market for at least 2 years. I guess the cost of custom pressed DVDs would have still been expensive then.

Imation (3M) continued pressing industrial discs for another two years. There were several well established industrial applications that used the LD format. They did very little consumer business starting around 1997.

One famous example would be Dragon's Lair (1983) [---] from April 2002.

Another one was mentioned from May 2002: U.K. Disney Store: Q3-02 (2002) [---]

Wow. That's super cool. I had no idea they were still pressing discs that late. That's pretty impressive for Dragon's Lair, considering it's such an old game.

Looks like Net, The (1995) [EE 1085] is another generous PAL release with both sides above 63min!

Phew, for a moment there I thought disc 1 of Star Trek: The Pilots [PLTES 34071] was about to lose it's crown. But it still reigns supreme at 63:55!

is that because it's PAL or would that even matter?
