Hey all,

Certain Laserdisc movies that I own have this weird distortion going on around the 35 or 40 minute mark, it appears as horizontal wavy lines bottom and/or top but progressively gets worse until the distortion becomes almost like bad tracking on a VHS; what is causing this and can the problem be fixed?

Not every movie does it only a few do it and occurs at the same location of the film no matter what player the affected movies are played on. Thanks in advance for any help or advice on this.

You're correct! I checked, it was hard to tell just by looking but laying the discs on a flat surface they showed subtle warping. What's the best method to correct this and how long will it take?

Thanks in advance.

I've never tried to flat them out, but the operation manuals for some Laserdisc players by Pioneer (including the CLD-990) recommend that you put the disc within two sheets of glass (or something equal) and place some books on top. I've never tried this myself to see if it works but the discs themselves will most likely not get any worse by using this method. Just be careful not to break any glass.

It also helps to store the discs vertically with no (or very little) leaning. This keeps the weight of discs from pushing on the bottom edge of the disc.

It can take some time but warped discs can be salvaged. If you are careful gentle heating of the affected disc with a hairdryer or the like can help before pressing I have found. Not too hot though - only done the heating before pressing thing to a couple or three very severely warped discs which did sort the problem. They were de-warped years ago now & they still play perfectly but one of the discs did have to be done more than once before finally laying totally flat.

Hope you can get them spinning as they should.

Cheers

I've had luck fast by reverse 'holding' them - like setting them over a pie plate where the middle would hang in air and thus sink.
Fixed 'em overnight.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll do the Pioneer suggested method when I can.
