How many of you own PAL encoded Laserdiscs in your collection? Please specify whether you are located in PAL territory or not. I own 3 PAL discs and 1 PAL+(anamorphic) disc in my collection. I am located in the US(NTSC) How many of you own a PAL capable Laserdisc player? If not, would you be interested in importing one? I currently do not however I am looking to import a player next year. How many of you do NOT own a PAL disc but would be interested in adding PAL titles your collection? Please specify significant/interested titles. I own PAL titles and looking to add another dozen or so titles whether I buy a player or not. Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Star Wars Definitive Collection are some I am interested in. |

Substance, I've got 3 PAL LD's, music videos, that are unique to PAL only. I still need to acquire a PAL player to do a proper transfer. One LD does have a digital track, so digital and analog capability is necessary. I only need a player to complete this transfer and then I'm done with PAL LD's for good. Would be interested in working out a share type deal. I won't be back in the U.S. till end of next summer but I am ready to make arrangements now, or sometime by next summer. Elvis |

There was no "Definitive" collection in PAL. There were the "Faces" editions available in France in both English with French subtitles (box set only) and dubbed in French (available as single titles only). Both French editions are in Standard Play. The "Special Edition" versions of the films were available 3 versions in the PAL format: Individual films dubbed in French, a boxset with French sub-titles and a UK edition. I have two PAL compatible players - both DVL-919E and I live in the US. I've got five PAL titles so far. Two of them are demo discs and one is an 8" music video collection. Other two are feature films. Never seen an entire film on PAL Laserdisc as I don't have a compatible player. Not interested in one. I live in Sweden. |

You have PAL in Sweden I think? Some PAL movies on laser are really good quality! Better than the NTSC version en Better than de DVD. Sadly, most of the PAL movies are from Philips.... Created at PDO-UK.... |

Yes we have PAL, but Laserdisc was never officially released here (though some players by Pioneer and Sony have a Swedish section in the manual). All the stores that sold Laserdiscs had NTSC. One good thing about PAL is the selection of music available. There's lots of good stuff, mostly affordable and shipping is cheap within Europe. Most music in NTSC is only available for import from either the US or Japan and usually the Laserdiscs alone are more expensive than PAL. |

I live in Switzerland and despite PAL LD's. I do not own a single one, and all my LD players are NTSC only |

There is a lot of people who say that the vast majority of the time the NSTC pressing has better PQ then the PAL pressing but why is this? PAL speed up aside, doesn't PAL retain more lines of resolution? Anyway I have 3 old PAL pressings of Atlantic City, An American Werewolf in London and Pink Floyd: The Wall, but my clear favorite is the special edition gatefold of Jumanji. |

alien wrote: There is a lot of people who say that the vast majority of the time the NSTC pressing has better PQ then the PAL pressing but why is this? PAL speed up aside, doesn't PAL retain more lines of resolution? I also think it's true that usually the best NTSC option is better than the best PAL option. However, that's not because it's NTSC or PAL. It's just that the better mastered and better pressed discs happened to be made in NTSC-land. In principle, as I understand it, PAL should deliver slightly superior PQ (resolution as you say, the speed up issue is not a problem for PQ at all and the 3:2 pull-down for 24fps film to NTSC conversion introduces its own PQ problems). But in practice, when buying a film on LD, there is a usually a better NTSC option if only because there are usually multiple NTSC releases including those from publishers who cared like Criterion. Also, such a large proportion of PAL releases came from the PDO plant in Blackburn, which was terrible. There are some nice PAL releases though, and the Pioneer Cinema series is superb. And Teletext is great, much better than CC! |

My collection mainly consists out of music titles, if available I prefer JP, next US (except DADC), next PAL. There are a number of very nice PAL only music titles with very good picture quality (made by Sony DADC Austria or MPO France) Titles/Artists coming to my mind : Mylene Farmer, Jean-Michel Jarre, Patricia Kaas, Mecano, and many other french artists, even the Michael Jackson Ghosts and U2 80-90 are PAL only and are of a very good quality. PAL movies I do not have a lot, some because they are fun (Taxi French release, StarWars UK release (Pioneer JP pressing), ...) |

I'm in the UK, both of my players are PAL/NTSC, not currently interested in getting more players. About 2/3rds of my collection are PAL, the rest NTSC. |

I have both PAL and NTSC LDs and I own a NTSC/PAL capable player ( CLD-925 ). There are some very nice PAL releases out there such as the Jumanji Special Edition which is said to have an excellent picture quality. There were some very decent late German releases from minor companies as well as French music releases from Mylène Farmer etc. I do not understand how people can throw phases into this thread such as "I despise PAL LDs" without giving any providing any sort of logical explanation If I like a movie I do not mind whether it is PAL or NTSC. The only "problem" with PAL LDs is they only have one analogue or one digital track. |

The main problem is that there were no good players released in Euope, and that's a big issue for sure. If there was a European equilant to something like CLD-D704, CLD-97, CLD-99 etc. then I'd be interested in getting more PAL titles. |

And I'd argue that the DVL-919E is a brilliant player too. Obviously neither to 925 or 919 are "Elite" players but the picture quality I get is excellent. I've never seen an Elite player in action but to be honest I can't imagine any picture quality boost would be worth the extra price. |

confederate wrote: What about the CLD-925 ? That was a brilliant player ! From what I've heard, it's just about as good as any D5XX or D6XX which from my experience is a big step away from any above average player released outside Europe. For PAL, it's probably some of the best you can get but not so good for NTSC. If you're using an HDTV and with a good scaler, picture can be tolerable even with a European player though still not as good as CLD-97, CLD-99 etc. |

I don't have proof but I remember reading about someone in Germany who modded hld-x0s for PAL playback a few years back. I am looking for a Theta Voyager(DVL-919 clone) and Pioneer DVL-919E so I can swap boards and possibly make the Theta PAL capable. Theta Voysger has an entire new power section with massive low noise transformers and multiple of them for each board. It might turn out to be the best PAL player if works:) |
