I have two discs. Blue Hawaii (MVC) and Jaws (Discovision CLV) and both of these discs have something strange about them. When you shine them in the light at an angle away from yourself, I see these little dots or dents. They do not go though the surface nor do they appear if you don't hold it at an angle. They don't see to be changed in color to other parts of the disc. I don't know what this is but I fear LaserRot. And I can't test them as my player is broken! IF somebody has similar signs on other discs, could you please check it out as I want know if this Laserrot or some other defect.

Nine times out of ten I've found that laser rot is completely invisible when inspecting a disc. I once had a 1st generation commercial CDR that clearly showed laser rot: And I have one laserdisc where I can see what appears to be a small hole in coating: Discovision discs usually have what is called the dead side which has a course coating which can look like lots of dots and dents. I hope this helps.

As I said you cannot feel it. Here are some pics of the questionable area. I hope this has given you more of an insight.

For SONY DADC US releases like the 2 titles above you can see it however, with normal daylight you would not notice it (with SONY release there is no color change). I had to exagerate the dots otherwise you would not be able to see them. They arn't really that dark. I think I may know a reason why these bumps are laserrot. You know how a laser reads data, well what if the laser beam hits this bumpy bit on the disc and beam gets refracted of this bit and since it is not directly straight with the laser, the beam bounces off and not back to the laser thus causein missing dots on the screen. It should look like little bumps and dents but you can't feel it on the surface. We maybe have found away to tell if a disc has LaserRot visually but I think it may need more testing. (test this with other brand pressings such as Technidisc and 3M). So if someone has a disc that is definiely rotted, could you please try and see if the same kind of thing happens?

firehorse_44 wrote: Helps when dealers at least preview their wares to acknowledge any degree of rot present. And that's how the never ending cycle of laserrot affected discs goes. If a seller is not trustworthy and sells you what you think is a fine, non affected disc and you find it has been affected, you want to sell for more than you got it for because you don't want loose money. It's a shame because that is one of the main reasons laserrot is still prominent becuase laserrot affected discs still get passed around as clean, rot free discs. BTW, here's a picture of my "theory". Sorry about the grammatical errors; I was in a rush.

I watch the first ten minutes or so of a disc so I will not always get the rot. however, on the top laser rot discs I always watch them. They make great frisbees!
