Bought a copy of the Star Wars Definitive Collection on ebay. Was shipped and arrived today.

Played disc 1 of A New Hope. Towards the end of side one, around chapter 15 or so, the video starts freaking out, and then the video and audio skip, and repeat a few frames (With Uncle Owen looking for Luke in the morning) On the Pioneer player, it skips back to chapter 13 and starts over. On the Yamaha, it just stops, and tries to read over and over, and then stops.

So far, both sides of disc 2 do the SAME THING.

What gives? Disc looks fine, no obvious rot. I see that some early pressings had flaws, but none like this. How do i tell what pressing I have?

Wait, is this what is an error in the chapter guide? Im not supposed to have 17 chapters on side 1 disc 1???!?! :?

A good place to start is here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic. ... pic/12305/

I can't really comment as I don't have TDC. Just the "Faces" release.

Yes. Saw that post too. Not sure if my disc is warped, I'm sure different players deal with it differently. The Pioneer I have is a cld-59. The Yamaha is a cdv-1700. The Pioneer stutters and keeps trying to play, the Yamaha just stops. After you mentioned it, I did notice that one corner of the disc sat higher slightly in the tray of the Yamaha.

As I mentioned in the post you linked, how does one try to flatten a disc?

never really tried, I've heard to warm it up?? and then keep it upright in a shelf of other discs.

I only have mine upright and tight so I guess over time it will flatten???
since they were in a box I really can't tell you how it may have happened but it sounds like it did.

Take disc in it protective sleeve and place between two pieces of wood and then place 10kgs worth of books on top and leave it like that for a couple of days.

Sounds like someone knew exactly what they were doing when they were selling this boxset!
Probably been sitting near a radiator for 10 years and the discs warped due to the heat.

Warped discs can be improved but it takes time - usually several years of being left under a very heavy weight so they will eventually flatten.
If you paid big money for this you might want to consider sending this back to the original owner as it sounds like a stinker.

one other thing I remember grasshopper telling me last year.
it could also be the laser gain and something else?? on your player.

that doesn't mean you can adjust it without a scope but have you tried another player???

It definately bowed a little bit, I can get a nickel under it I bet. Doesn't appear to be Pringle shaped, just bowed. The hard cover book was missing from the set, so I imagine the discs were cock-eyed in the box for a time.

I've read online, that you take it out in the sun to heat it up, and then get something flat and heavy on it, concave down.

Or if you have a hot attic, do the put-it-between-two-pieces-of-wood-with-books-on-top thing up there. The temp will make the acrylic more malleable and take to the flattening.

Always wanted one of these for completion's sake and because they look cool. But with all the rotting issues, and the fact that it is very hard to find a corrected one I've never had much luck. Plus everybody and their brother charge an arm and a leg because it's Star Wars and "rare". Shipping for the heavy thing is also expensive.

End of the day, the CLV Faces discs are the same thing and made FAR better. Better yet are the original SWE Fox discs, using the old Japanese Special Collection transfers, the latter of which are best for ESB and ROTJ. For the original film it's a toss up between that and the secret Fox repressing by Technidisc which uses a gorgeous element.

(obligatory wimpering about why Image didn't send that master to say Pioneer goes here...)

I layed all of the discs out on the table, and it appears that only the first 2 of A New Hope, are significantly warped. One disc in Empire has some wobble, but I think it would still play alright. The set was missing the hardcover book, and I wonder if it was stored that way for a while, and the book missing caused the discs to sit funny, and warp. I have a replacement book on the way. I'll try to find something to put the discs between and stick them in the attic, as it does usually get very warm in the summer, approaching 100* some days.

Hi,

I am not sure if this will help - it worked for me though on a couple of warped discs, one was very bad.

Two quite thick boards (MDF or similar is ideal) which must be 100% flat a bit larger than the disc & weight (heavy books work well) plus heat & time should hopefully sort it.

With a heat gun or powerful hairdryer warm the boards on both sides, quite hot but not so hot that you cannot handle the boards. Gently heat the disc (not with a heat gun, far too hot) then place it on one of the warmed boards with a sheet of paper between to prevent friction marks or scratches & place the other board on top. Very heavy weights on the boards & leave for a few days. The slightly warped disc came out perfectly flat & the very warped disc came out much better but still with a very slight bow to it - gave it a second heat & press & it is flat & plays well now. Both disc had this done about three years ago & they are still flat but more to the point they play well so it appears to have worked well on my discs.

Cheers

had the discs packed in the case for several months, and with the replacement book that was originally missing. My wife reported that A New Hope played fine last week.

Horray!~

Screw flattening, I'd contact the seller and send them back for a refund.

Also you may want to consider the "faces" laserdiscs over the definitive.

They are the same transfers. Definitive are CAV so the quality is better. But the faces have more advantages.

  • They are cheaper. They might be pricier now but I got them for less than $20 shipped in late 2015
  • You get 3 nice looking gatefold covers vs one black box
  • 1 hour per side as opposed to 30 minutes per side
  • No reported rot issues
  • No worries of getting missing wielding footage

I guess you get nicer books in the definitive, but that's about it.

We own two pressings of this disc. We first bought the Pioneer Japan pressing in 2013 along with the "Faces" release (which is a good condition Pioneer USA pressing without any defects). We eventually managed to buy the Mitsubishi pressing one year later, and our copy has rot on Sides 1, 3 and 5 of Episode IV. Sides 3-6 of Episode V and Side 2 of Episode VI are rotted. In all cases of rotted sides, it's light rot. It's very hard to decide which pressing is better (one has mastering issues but no defects, while the other one is the opposite of the other one). We've spotted no warping on all sides of the two copies as well.

"As I mentioned in the post you linked, how does one try to flatten a disc?"

I once left this:

Knowledge Disc (1984) [GEP85-010]

In a PR-8210 after I shut off the power. Hours later I open the lid, and the disc was warped like a potato chip. Closed the lid, turned on the power and came back hours later and put the disc between a glass top coffee table and the safety glass off a Jensen monitor. added weights and it got flat and playable again...
