Listen up I have a challenge for you all today!

Having watched the laserdisc version last night this copy http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/04661/198 ... -The-(1992) which appears fine to me. But this version isn’t under the microscope for today’s listening challenge.

What I want you to do is pay strict attention to sound to “know what to look for and listen for”!

The issue I’ve noticed a few years ago and I probably haven’t mentioned this before, is the DVD region 2 and no doubt possible region 1 DVD have sound blending issues of front LCR into the surrounds which should be happing ether on the mixing dubbing stage unless of course the original mixing team was stoned on grass and p**s drunk, or some wanbee sound technician who mastered the DVD doesn’t know his/her craft or its very likely this originated for the Dolby AC- 3 THX laserdisc mastering?

So get this version on the laserdisc player and turn down or disconnect the LCR from the AVR only one + wire turn off the sub and listen only to the surrounds can you, hear dialogue or any left and right front in the surrounds?

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/10952/089 ... -The-(1992)
If you can’t check your region 1 DVD also check the bluray version.

That’s the challenge for you all today so forget about stuffing the turkey, get LISTENING!

If I had the opportunity to listen to the Dolby Stereo 70mm version It would be interesting to see if the same issue exits thou very unlikely, but still interesting to find out.

Cheers

I tried this today briefly. I turned the Fronts and Center all the way down and the surrounds all the way up. During the cabin scene in the beginning I could hear some very faint dialog coming from the surrounds. This was with my ear right up against the tweeter and with the volume louder than reference level. I can't imagine this would be noticeable under normal listening conditions. Hope that helps.

Yeah it doesn’t matter what level it should be in the surrounds least of all for discrete I’ve listened to better Dolby stereo matrix mixes than this copy of The Last of the Mohicans. I had to turn the DVD off because I was starting to find it depressing to listen to.

Some matrix mixes often have common speech leaking into the surrounds or over on the left/right front but that’s the matrix circuitry for you.

But cheers anyway for taking the time to checking your version out which copy do you have?

Some mixes do it internally like, Alien (1979) DVD 5.1 chest bursting scene Kane flipping out and the rest of the crew panicking the voices are heard in the discrete surrounds why I don’t know it sounds confusing but its not happening all the time as the surrounds at some point are mute and that is normal for some 70mm mixes. It’s uncommon today because now mixers use the surrounds as much as possible to keep all active.

With matrix Dolby stereo all the channels remain active.

There is discreteness in The Last of the Mohicans when the score starts on the open the centre is subtly different to left/right front with precession drum slowly beating away. But the annoying LCR leaking into the surrounds all the way though is too annoying.

Oh right so I guess its safe to now assume the transfer for the DVD came from version produced for the Laserdisc. Good show mate.
