Something I've been trying to get ebay.co.uk to change for ages; thought it would worth asking if any other Brits here would like to join me and add some weight to my request.

Basically, on ebay.co.uk we have two categories for laserdiscs:

Electronics > TV, Video & Audio > DVD & Home Cinema > Laserdisc
Books, Films & Music > DVD, Film & TV > Other Film Formats > Laserdisc

The first one should of course be named Laserdisc Players (the equivalent category on ebay.com is named correctly). At the moment, sellers are listing players and discs in this category, which makes it difficult to browse for a player, and if browsing for discs in the other category you don't see everything available.

I've suggested this change to eBay several times via the contact forms and live chat, but nothing has ever been done.

Good day to you miles,

Thank you for mentioning this as I have noticed this, and have had to try different search methods in order to view all Laserdisc ''software & hardware listings.

Thank you also for trying to get e-bay to change the categories ''at least you tried''

Sincere Regards

Nice try man !
Don't hold your breath on that score.......
Wheels of change turn mighty slow there.......
Unless they think of a new way to get your money as a dealer/seller !
Miracles will happen though !
Maybe when you least expect it they will make the change, just never know with Flea Bay !!!

I'd be all for getting this changed as well.

Another thing is the target audience for selling laserdiscs is obviously international.
Trying to sell discs to just the UK alone is not easy, yet Ebay charge UK sellers more to list items for international sale.

I ran a shop on Ebay.co.uk for exactly 1 year and I could not believe how expensive it was.
I am in regular contact with many sellers in the US who also have Ebay shops and upon comparing fees it became apparent sellers in the UK are charged far more.
Quite why that is I have no idea but it gives a massive competitive advantage to US sellers.

One perk for UK sellers though is that items can still be sent via the much cheaper surface mail (ship) option rather than airmail.
I used to buy all my lasers from the US via surface mail until they discontinued that service in 2007. So suddenly selling LDs to US buyers (which I have done many times) can seem quite attractive if you offer that option. Better still US postal services don't include any free insurance cover whereas all Royal Mail UK postal services do by default. So for cheap items, even those shipped via surface mail you can include insurance up to £46 for free which is great for low to medium cost discs that you are selling.

The UK is fighting back!!

I buy discs from the UK, but in order to search properly, I must go the the UK ebay site, not search from the US site or else I won't see all the listings.

Yes that is a by product of UK listings only being visible to UK buyers unless the seller has specifically listed items to be available internationally which costs more to do so.

Another good tip for UK sellers is list a few auction items as international to attract international buyers and mention in the listings to access the other listings via ebay.co.uk which will help keep total costs down as you are only paying for a few international listings. Over time once you have sold a few discs business can be conducted directly with the same buyers outside of Ebay which helps keeps costs down even further.

I didn't realise that fees were higher to list internationally. (So far I've only ever been a buyer.)

I decided that, as a form of protest, I was going to report every laserdisc listed in the electronics category as a miscategorised item.

Did about 20 (you can report up to 10 at a time) then got bored. :(
