As a massive fan of what I think is THE best space opera on TV bar none, I thought I was on to a winner with LD being the only high-quality format to support it. This epic story had a distinct and finite 5-series arc, although the real meat of the story ran through seasons 2,3 and 4. Started buying up the episodes, to find that Warner brothers only released series 1 and 5 in their entirity, with a smattering of episodes from seasons 2, 3 and 4. Can anybody please explain the madness of WB's thinking? I ended up getting the entire series on DVD but have a pile of B5 LDs which will never ever be complete.... |

Stupidity? Or, they could just have wanted to release what they thought were the best episodes. That would have been a lot of discs wouldnt it have? |

Loved B5, it definitely was the best sci-fi space opera ever on TV (IMHO). Would love to get my hands on the series finale. I recently bought a large lot of star trek discs just to get the first 2 and last 2 episode of ST: The Next Generation. |

Er, sorry about that! Do enjoy the discs, though. Reading a little more on the Wikipedia page (I know, hardly investigative journalism), and it cites the above-mentioned stupidity, short-sightedness. It does also mention that WB marketing were put off when incorrect stories about release of DVDs circulated, causing a slowdown of LD sales. There was also the sad story of the effects companies which went bust and lost all the effects shots, meaning they couldn't remaster them, despite show's creators having the foresight to film in widescreen for future HDTV. Thankfully, as B5 fans we got it in its entirity, despite some flaws like the fifth season and its general mishandling by WB. As LD fans we got well and truly shafted by WB. |

laserdisc may still be the way to go, the cgi scenes were shot in 4:3 and so they stretched them to 16:9 for the dvds and it ends up looking a little funky |

Definitely would be the way to go if the whole of seasons 2,3 and 4 had been released. The ones I do have certainly look good, but its so frustrating to have to switch between formats whilst re-watching a whole season |

Just watched Babylon 5 #5.12: Objects at Rest/Sleeping in Light (1998) [16969]. Final two episodes and the best ones out of the entire series IMHO. Great acting, story, and music. It would be nice if they did a high def release of this like they did with ST:TOS and now with ST:TNG. They would obviously need to completely redo the CGI as it was all rendered for standard def, but boy it would be great. |

yazorin wrote: yeah all those models are gone.. I remember reading something about that a few years ago that their idea was to render them in standard def (which was suitable for the time) and then do it later in high def if needed. However, all the CGI models "got lost or something" along the way after the series ended. They would have to go back and redo everything from scratch (except the station as they did a high res model for the last made for TV movie). I seriously doubt that this will ever happen. This article talks a little about some of the problems they had with certain models they did have access to: http://www.cgsociety.org/index.php/CGSFeatures/CGSFeatureSpecial/babylon_5_lost_tales_part_two |
