Mine is to sell my last two musical video LD's and be done with this dead horse of a technology. Some new remastered video releases to replace/upgrade some of these LD's would be nice. Elvis

I recall you saying you had all the titles you ever wanted on LD previously.

Oh, about 125 musical video/concert LD's that I've digitized lossless. Some others I traded for digitally. Never was interested in movies on LD, gave away those that came into my possession. Not nearly as big as your collection the way it sounds, but then I'm not interested in the LD"s for the covers/art extras or to floss my teeth with the shiny discs, mobility is a plus. If I can acquire the videos/concerts on DVD that is more than adequate, can replace sound with remastered tracks. Also I'm not interested in all musical genres. Heavy Metal, very few Rock, Rap, Country, sappy pop, very few R&B, just don't interest me. Great example of superior sound was on the DVD Arcadia release last year. Replaced my digitized LD with the DVD tracks in PCM sound. Suspect that there will be quite a few other DVD/BD remasters of LD/VHS only releases in the next few years. Elvis

Elvis Having collected LDs yourself you obviously know there is some great material out there otherwise you would not have started in the first place...right? What I would say though is you are selling the format seriously short when you have only sampled such a tiny quantity of the vast library available, which runs into many thousands of music titles. Also I believe the genres that you have dismissed as 'of no interest' represent the most popular categories of music ever released. Any music that falls outside of those categories is really of such minor interest as to barely justify a mention at all. So either you have very eclectic musical tastes or you are simply making misleading comments about a format you have very little experience of. Likewise even someone not interested in movies on LD would be unwise to dismiss the format so easily without proper justification otherwise you run the risk of losing all credibility, especially on this forum! So my new year's resolution is a little more optimistic - I believe laserdisc still remains the most desirable consumer format ever released to collect. I also think Elvis will realise the error of his ways in 2012 and resume collecting laserdiscs in the near future again!

I think for my New Years resolution is to try and find the laserdiscs I'm still looking for. (especially a few of the tough ones) Being my main collecting in the scenery/documentary category, some of them I'm sure were pressed in smaller quantities, and on obscure lables too (who are no longer in business) compared to a movie release on a well known label. So that being said, quite alot of mine I have won't be released on a dvd or blu-ray. So I'm sticking with LD Considering over 20 years time, (for some models) how many solid built LD players are still functioning. So it will be interesting to see how many newer made dvd/blu-ray players (that you can hold with one hand) will last 20 years. I bet not very many

I bet not very many Good point - the youngest LD player I have currently is a DVL919 and that was manufactured in 1999. Most of my LD players are from the mid 90's yet still work like clockwork which is a testament to their build quality. Very few other electrical appliances with as many moving parts would last as long. I guess Elvis who doesn't like formats will be juggling his content across the latest hot shot storage device which is likely to be obsolete even sooner than Blu-ray and I wouldn't give it even another 5 years.

I've already stated on another thread that everything is going fully digital soon enough. There won't be any need for a hard copy format. I'm not denying that LD gave me some material I could not find on another format/quality wise, it's just that I've pretty much found all the material I'm interested in and digitized it. As far as those other music genres that I'm not interested in, bon voyage, there's plenty new material coming out that I will never be able to keep up with. I'm just stating what works for me, I understand all you folks out there who have other genre interests/ movies/ pretty pictures etc., if it works for you, go for it. I'm not a pack rat and love what digital versatility does for me in minimalizing my posessions. Good luck all LD'ers in 2012 !!! Elvis

I don't have anything to prove to you or anyone here. I guarantee that there are far more folks in my camp of thinking than the "pack rat" mentality here on the forum. You need all those genres and enjoy them, go for it. Yes, my need out of the 80's music scene for what I use it for, is very specific, as I stated before. I do enjoy reading and learning more about the various technologic specs of the day on this forum. Elvis

Elvis, you're not really what you say are.
You say you have nothing to prove. Yet you must continuously make comments that you know are unappreciative of what this forum and it's member feel are valuable to them, so what's the point of that? You are trying to prove something, to us and probably even to yourself, in Don Quixote fashion.
You say the forum members here have the mentality of "pack rats", but merely collecting some items that are enjoyable and also may have sentimental value is not pack rat behavior. And you've done this yourself. Again, what are you trying to prove?
You guarantee more folks are in your camp of thinking? I doubt that most folks would even know what you're talking about and wouldn't even care. Most folks in regards to home entertainment are in the camp that says: what's easiest and cheapest for me? But most folks are also appreciative of any sort of A/V format that an acquaintance collects, and if the format is older and unique, they are even curious and amazed. Most folks are not pompous snobs who are dismissive of another person's tastes in collecting, but understand because they may have other types of items they themselves collect.
Most folks would not be arrogant and condescending, as you are, and I would say you are not in the "camp of thinking" of most regular folks, but you are in that camp of thinking of supercilious snobs and egocentric provacateurs.
Plus it's a shame that you are managing to besmirch the fine name of Elvis by using it as part of your moniker. Elvis was a collector, and would have been labelled a "pack rat" by your definition.
