That was certainly a bargain, but money isn't everything. I've planned to invite some friends over to my house to watch it soon, seems to be quite epic. I got some LD's yesterday (as well as two DVD's, The mods trilogy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). Here's a picture. http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t41 ... G_0027.jpg

Will be listing my "extra" copies at my LDDB shop............... Most epic PBS series CIRCA 1989......... Oh wow. Is it a really good series? I picked up discs 1,2,4 and 5 not too long ago as part of a lot. I guess I'll have to see if I like it and if I do, keep an eye out for disc 3.

won a lot of 10...so that means i will have 2 doubles, and no one i know collects these to trade with. But I won't need Home Alone and Back To The Future. I bought it for Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, Mighty Ducks, and the rest.

vinylcollector wrote: I'm looking to get the Willie Wonka Chocolate Factory LD. Has anyone seen both editions? Is the re-mastered any better picture then the original? It doesn't look like there was a Japan edition for it. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) [11206]is the one i own, i sort of remember reading a review that this is open matte? or if it's not open that the widescreen really dosn't give that much extra on the sides. this one came in a lot that i bought years ago and i wanted the film but was happy it was this one, but i can't remember all the details as to why i wanted this one over the other one

I rarely comes up for sale here in the UK. I remember reading that when it was first released a lot of people complained about the 3 panel jacket, I quite like it myself and never really understood what there was to dislike about it.

Got three LDs today. Through a glass darkly must have the greatest cover I've ever seen for a Swedish film. It's awesome to finally have Let it be. A big thanks to G and J Rarities!

(quick update: I just bought 2 more LaserDisc's for Recobanchou - The Hindenburg and Olivia Soul Kiss. I'm hoping that the LTBX transfer of The Hindenburg isn't the edge-enhanced mess that the US release is, although the US release got the sound transferred brilliantly in PCM, which the DVD botched - and it's not the fault of Dolby Digital either. And I hope Soul Kiss isn't rotted or speckled because, in my experience, the 8-inch titles seem to have more defects than 12-inch discs. The Hindenburg was 18.99, which I think is a fair price and Soul Kiss was $38.00, which is high but I've never really seen it below $35 or so. So, I think I got pretty good prices with their Valentine's Day Sale.)
I just received another copy of the Japanese 8-inch LaserDisc of Olivia Newton-John "Twist of Fate" since my first one rotted. I ordered my newest copy from Recobanchou on Monday and received it yesterday, which is amazingly fast service from Japan! Besides the Japanese 8-inch and the US 12-inch LaserDisc releases, I also own Twist of Fate on VHD Video Disc and it's interesting to compare the two formats - the VHD has no dropouts or luma/chroma noise, but VHD's maximum luma response of 3.1 MHz (244 lines) and its 500 kHz dot-interlaced chroma resolution of 30 lines gives it a 'smudged' look that is strange to see in direct comparison with the LaserDisc. Seen by itself, the VHD looks a bit soft, but otherwise quite acceptable and much better than RCA's CED or standard VHS and Beta - directly compared to LD, it falls apart. The sound of the VHD is actually closer to that of the LaserDisc than I would have expected; JVC's proprietary 'DE' Noise Reduction and Dynamic Range Expansion system, developed specifically for, and used on all VHD discs, really quiets down the background noise inherent in capacitance-based systems and provides a usable dynamic range of about 60db - the frequency response of VHD sounds like FM Stereo radio, seeming to roll off around 15 kHz and having no real bass response below about 40 Hz. It also has a somewhat 'boxy' quality, where LaserDisc's FM analog stereo is sparkling and open, with or without CX Noise Reduction (some audiophiles claim that CX NR, even when decoded, destroys delicate stereo soundstage information, but since CX works by summing the two channels to create a simgle DC control channel and uses that to compress or expand both channels identically, it can't affect the stereo imaging. That's why CX shouldn't be used on discs that have two seperate or otherwise unrelated analog soundtracks. There are many LaserDisc's incorrectly CX encoded that way though.)
I apologize for the LD/VHD comparison review of Twist of Fate - it wasn't originally my intention, I just happened to play my US & Japanese copies last night and compared them to the VHD version - which I hadn't watched in several years - and thought that maybe LDDB Forum members might be interested in my observations.
Anyway, back to new LD purchases; Because of their sale, on Thursday my partner ordered me the Squeeze LD of "Terminator 2", the T2 'Prologue' LD Single, the "Making of Die Hard w/A Vengeance" LD Single, the "Highlights of Fox Video on LaserDisc" LD Single and he also bought the LD of "Cannonball Run 3" for himself (blech! It's not even a 'real' Cannonball Run film! Of course, he also loves "King Kong 2", the direct sequel to the 1976 Kong, and even imported the widescreen VHD when we got our first 3D VHD player from N$A back in 2000, and then he bought the official DVD of Kong 2 when it was released a few years ago.)
T2 will be my first squeeze LD, so I'm really excited about getting it and seeing how it looks played on my system and the Runco and EAD TheaterVision players. I'm also looking forward to finding out if the AC-3 soundtrack is the Cinema Digital Sound mix or the slightly different and more limited 70mm 6-track Mag mix - aince I don't know the 6-track mag mix, I'll run the Squeeze LD's AC-3 sound in sync with the original DVD that uses the CDS mix and compare the sound mixes and dynamics. I have Adobe Audition but am hopeless at 'reading' the waterfall spectrum plots, so I'll have to use my ears and take notes of the elapsed times and side of any differences I notice.
