I still say we only have 1 week and 5 days now! :) Enjoy them while you got them. I have been watching Doomsday preppers and one guy thinks there will be an emp pulse and wipe everything out. Going on his theory, when the pulse strikes, unless your player is protected it is going to go pop. I am making my metal protector as we speak so I can continue watching my laserdisc off a solar power grid! You are all welcome to come. On a serious note, Pioneer only quit making laserdisc players 2 or 3 years ago.

I'm finding the conversation in this thread interesting but agree that it has strayed far off topic. It doesn't bother me much because it's a kinda natural evolution of a conversation but I know it can irritate a lot of people when topics go far off course. Would it perhaps be a good idea to start a Digital vs. Analogue thread or maybe a Digital/Analogue comparison board?

Some of the comments in this thread make me think that there would be demand for reproduced batch of foil hats

Seriously, what makes me seriously worried ain't lack or deterioration of players, parts or discs but disappearance of knowledge. I've had severe problems to get my beta recorders serviced for years and I'm afraid the situation will eventually expand to cover pretty much all old and obsolete technology, next generation of repairsmen keep replacing those experienced veteran gits day by day and in most cases they don't have a clue about anything except how to toss broken devices straight into warranty swap pile - or as alternative they simply refuse to take any retro gear in because "it takes too long to find out how to fix them" :|

Hello Remington,
You are welcome. . . . When some people say it's a subjective matter I disagree, for me it's that obvious and I'm glad. . . . .

Take care

Regards

Honest answer, as long as there are parts and those that can fix them. Could be 1 year, 5 years or 50. It all depends. I do know for a fact I am converting my laserdiscs to dvds as I can though so I dont lose them.

Here is the place in Washington State I mentioned earlier; if I recall correctly they stock players for sale as well...
http://laserdiscservice.com/

I cant remember the gentlemans name in Virginia who does repairs but I will look for him. He is also a regular on the AVS Forum and helps people out with LD related issues. If anyone remembers his name or username please pass it on to help us all out...

i had my CLD-R7G repaired by duncan at bayview-laserdiscservice.
he did a fantastic job, it was damaged in shipping and the rails that held the lens came out :wtf:
anyway he also replaced the feet with larger or better ones, can't really remember.
also i think he did some other upgrade.

it was great to talk with him, at the time i was repairing and selling old arcade machines and he told me about repairing the old PR-7820 for dragon's lair.
at the time it was too large and heavy for fedex and he had to send a repaired unit back to alaska.

i remember seeing dragons lair at arcades in NYC and it cost about 3 bucks or more for a game, and that was back in the early 80s.

Sorry to cut your quote short but this is what I am talking about. If anyone knows about repair/refurbishment of LD players anywhere around the globe please let us know where they are as packaging and shipping cost is a b**ch...

with laserdisc almost certain to never come back ive been wondering how much longer we have until the players are all dead and discs are lost or damaged? Think about all those players that get damaged during shipping all the time, one day they could all be broken.. What if some major changes go on and we stop using electricity the way we use it now? So far i've spent about 500$ on discs and players and I start wondering what i would do with it all if i couldn't use it anymore.. how much longer do we have? 20 years? 50 years?

I'm not worried about it. Not because were all gonna die on December 21st anyways, but because there's not a single disc that I'm gonna watch enough that it's going to wear out and become unwatchable.

Secondly, as long as there is demand, someone out there will take advantage of this and make a new player. There's a reason you still see vinyl in stores. I don't see laserdisc ever going away for that very reason

I heard rumours that Laserdisc was Jesus and he shall return and save us all from the evils of Bluray.

A good thread this. I think the most likely outcome is a new laserdisc player being produced at some stage for fans of the format. Most likely Japan but not for a few years. I would suspect a 21st century version of the X9 but with a less sturdy build quality and a lot more compact than machines we've seen in the past.
I don't see new pressings but then again I remember thinking that vinyl was dead 15 years ago and I've started buying vinyl again after a break of 20 years. I'd forgotten how good it sounds.

I dont know if the hw and sw will survive much longer but I see less and less Laserdisc adds in local pages. Local cheap LD sources are becoming very scarce. Going this way in a few years only sellers on ebay will survive and only few can/will buy from them since prices are way marked up. I love the feeling of buying a lot of Lds for a few bucks a piece then finding out out of that lot a few of the titles are really great shape and rare ones. I think %80 of the LDs in the US are in the hands of collectors and sellers.
