LOL I just Googled it and found this (scroll down to 'controversy') https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rescuers#

It's metioned on LDDB too http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/18647/14793-AS/Rescuers-The

So elahrairrah, you managed to get the recalled version with the 'easter egg'?

Got Brainstorm (1983) [ML106609] today all the way from Denmark. Picked it up for around 12 USD or 9 GBP + shipping. Not too bad. Excellent movie, looking forward to watch it with AC-3. :)

Yeah, I got the recalled version--at least going by the catalog number. I haven't popped it in to check yet.

Then again I do have to wonder if this racy image in question is also viewable in the older CAV release too (which I have as well)? According to a story from E! Online way back in '99 . . .
Quote:
The recall--which only applies to video copies sent to stores this week, since previous copies released in 1992 originated from a different, uncorrupted print--is the first of its kind for Disney.
And that isn't completely true either about this recall being the "first of its kind for Disney." They recalled The Best of Roger Rabbit Laserdisc back in 1996 for a racy image they didn't catch previously, but can plainly see it on the LD since it's in CAV. Though, that wasn't the "official" reason why they Disney recalled that disc. Here's the story on that one from Entertainment Weekly (which I actually read about in the print version way back when!) . . .

''The Best of Roger Rabbit'' - Freezing a frame on the new video version might alter the film's G-rating

And I have that Laserdisc as well ;)

My latest addition to my humble collection: Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 - limited edition. Its missing the film reel bonus, but other than that it's complete. There were only 15,000 copies of this edition.

Cool stuff, xellospl! Hopefully my box set will have the film reel bonus. Bought a huge lot with Tenchi Muyo a couple of weeks ago. Out on the seven seas, so probably won't see it in a while...

This arrived during the week:

Image

Part of an interesting little piece of Australian laserdisc history and one of my favorite 'good B-grade' flicks. There were a couple of attempts to more widely market LD's here. The first I remember was a push of PAL discs and players in the very early 90's, I was working in a Hi-Fi store at the time, it wasn't too successful and LD was always a tiny niche market here. Then of course 5.1 sound came along in the early 90's too.

We sold the equipment, but the only way to make use of it was via NTSC LD. Several Hi-Fi shops established their own LD video libraries of imported discs for their customers, something the local distributors were not happy with as they weren't getting their cut, all sorts of legal threats over copyright ensuing. Our customers were importing their own discs too and the local distributors to give some credit realised that rather than trying to stamp it out completely they should get in on the act and get their piece from local sales.

And so began the short era of 'authorised NTSC laserdisc imports'. Close up of the sticker on Starship Troopers:
Image

Most of these (like my copy of Bulworth) were the US pressings with the local stickers added:
Image
http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/09384/0051185/Bulworth

Starship Troopers seems to have been one of only a handful of NTSC movie titles specifically for Australia.
http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/43183/A002500VFE/Starship-Troopers
And we got different artwork too (pretty much every country seemed to with Starship Troopers) shared with the Hong Kong release, but in English.

The other nice things about this release is no rot, which apparently the US one is prone to; no censorship/edits like the Japanese one; AC3 sound which the European/PAL ones didn't; and it has a really nice PQ for LD, low noise and lots of detail. I'm going to stick my neck out and say the best version of Starship Troopers to own!!

Interesting! When did they start "officially" importing the NTSC LDs to Australia? I ask because I visited Sydney and Perth back in '97 and at an HMV they were selling Independence Day but it had a PAL sticker on it. So that kept me from buying it.

My memory isn't that specific on dates.....

The PAL marketing push was in the very early 90's, then it was the multi-channel HT market and private importation that led to the situation with 'official' NTSC discs. I kind of recall it being several years after the 'PAL push' perhaps mid-early 90's. Both PAL and NTSC continued to be sold; and plenty of private importation of NTSC continued too.

at the nearest Hard-Off.

Just thought try and see if its listed on eBay, not a peep of it. Not that much in a hurry for it. Liked it when I first saw it on VHS rental in the 80's.

Picked up Blade in the Dark, A (Das Haus mit dem dunklen Keller) (1983) [EC1003-LD] today. Got lucky and managed to get it for a good price. My copy is number 405.

A bit interesting that it is a european release, but is NTSC. The distributor, which I've been in contact with, said it is because PAL sucks on laserdisc. The pressing was also done in Japan because it was better. Truly a "by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts" release.

Yeah, I've been trying to get all of those EC Entertainment LDs as they're quite an oddity--coming out near the end of Laserdisc's life and in NTSC despite being released in PAL land.

The only one I don't have is Mangiati Vivi/Eaten Alive though I do have the movie on LD under a different label which is also a Euro company who released NTSC LDs--Professional Cine Media.

I think that company also released Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust on LD, even though the label says "Cult Epics." As the packaging is far too similar to PCM's.

Yeah. The guy behind EC Entertainment still owns rights for 10 movies. They also released even more movies on DVD and VHS. Still a ton of those in stock, so I'll probably pick up the DVDs since it is more convenient.

Got my first few PAL Laserdiscs though I'm probably never going to get a PAL player. Yeah, makes no sense, but when you're a horror movie fan, you do stupid things like this. At least the cover/gatefold for Zombi 2 is cool:

And I couldn't believe how utterly basic the cover of the bootleg of The New York Ripper is:

Got a copy of the Atari E.R.I.C. POP #1 promo disk, and 3M definitely didn’t have their s..tuff together in 1982 either, at least when the disk's almost 35 years old... Very poor SNR at the beginning of the (CAV) disk and speckling throughout.

And cool, a bootleg
