Quite an advanced age for a venerable format!

Although there was a pre-production test batch of Jaws back in 1977, the first commercial release hit the market end of 1978 as Jaws (1975) [12-001].

And somehow, even the first released can still be played today!

(is it what heavy laser rot looks like on a cake? ;-))

Let's see if other formats will still play 40 years after entering the market.

For some reason, *6* seems to be the magic number for new video commercial formats:

  • DVD -> 1996
  • HDDVD/BD -> 2006
  • UHD BD -> 2016

Let's synchronize our watches now and try to play these formats by, respectively, 2036, 2046 and 2056!

Happy Birthday laserdisc! I'm so glad it grew out of its disco phase...

Does anyone know the exact date that the first discs went on sale in Atlanta in 1978? I've seen both 11th and 15th December used in various places, mostly 15th but I've never seen anything that says it definitively.

What a milestone.......

My old disovision "Grey Lady Down" barely plays. So much corruption on one disc that i have
comtemplated throwing it away........
Also glad for the evolution out of that early phase. Several phases of evolution had things improving over time...........Finally LaserDisc embraced hi tech and got those bugs out
at the end..... i.e. THX, DTS, and letterboxed aspects.......

Happy to have jumped on the band wagon even though late in 1996.........

Keep 'em spinning !

i owned a broken player (PIONEER CLD-1080) since 2001, but only got a functional player (another, fully functional CLD-1080)
and discs for the first time around 2005, so i'm probably one of the johnny-come-lately-ist among this community's regular membership...

Long live DiscoVision.

Thanks, only rotten morality. I only care about material things instead of people.

Nice to see the evolution of the PIONEER logo over the decades:

Also a section on LaserDisc in the commemorative video from 2:40 to 3:54 all the way to their 2017 UHDBD/DB/DVD/CD reader/writer that I'm currently using.

お誕生日おめでとうございます、パイオニア株式会社様!

It's quite astonishing to think about the fact that high definition video in 1080i was actually available on High-Vision Laserdic years before the advent of DVD, which does have inferior maximal definition, and way more than 10 years before 2K Blu-Ray Disc or HD-DVD !
