Post subject: Jackie Chan's Protector japanese LD vs edited HK dvd Posted: 18 Dec 2017, 20:43 |

The japanese LD is the longest cut 95min of JC's movie the Protector. I have the HK dvd which is a re-worked shorter version compared to US cut.
What does japanese LD have as extra scenes compared to JC's own re-edited HK-version? Are there extra scenes with more fights in the jap LD version which is missing on re-edited HK dvd?
Jap LD is a heavy rotter

What are the differences in running times? I have the UK dvd which is the R-rated version. US cut has all the nudity intact but missing some details in martial arts fights which the re-edited HK version have. I have the original HK Universe dvd which is the re-edited version. Missing details I refer to are when JC fights kickboxing champion Bill Wallace in the drug factory, every punch and kick between them both is more visible with white flour flying around when they punch each other also there are some more fight scenes added which are missing from the US cut. The japanese LD has some extra scenes added are they only dialogue scenes or action scenes? However the japanese LD doesn't have english audio and is not english friendly. This disc is also a rotter, with a critical grade of having playback issues

I'm asking a legitimate question, do you buy LDs or do you just want to know what the missing or uncut scenes are between VHS, LD, DVD and Bluray? you don't have to use terms like " Here we go again" it's rude to write that way! do you see me comment in your threads? no, I don't comment in your threads coz I stay away from you! I try to avoid you! if you can't write a good thing then butt out! I bet many people on this forum are annoyed @ ya when you reply in an unfriendly way in other threads!? if I have the UK dvd and re-edited H/K dvd, what doas that tell you? do I buy discs or not? I 'd like to ask Q's first about a certain edition then decide if it's worth to buy or not? since there were no intelligent replies in the other thread about Invazion UZA, I decided not to buy the disc. maybe same goes with japanese LD Protector when no-one contributes with wisdom about added scenes. did studio add action or only dialogue scenes?

signofzeta wrote: I read I Am Jackie Chan and he says quite a few things about how he was disappointed with this movie but at least it wasn’t another Battle Creak Brawl. I think it’s quite possible that there was additional photography done. If you have that book (I cannot recommend it more highly) the answer is probably in there. that's correct JC was very upset and disapointed with director not working the way JC intended to. I love this movie and it's one of the very best ones JC did. New York scenery in the 80's was one of the best filming locations

finding info on interweb. japanese blu-ray edition has 3 versions of Protector. Japan longest version is 105 minutes compared to LD which is 97 minutes long. H/K cut is 87 min. US cut is 95 min japanese LD is probably missing scenes which are available on japanese blu-ray http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=20222now I wonder what's missing from LD?

I recently picked up the Fortune Star DVD just based on the director and the cover and was glad I did. Excellent gritty action and story and great authentic NYC 1980s backdrop. Jackie Chan is great, he lived in my hometown for a few years and visited often in the 90s to see his parents. I saw him walking down the street once in an all white suit. His movies are great but only one part of the Hong Kong action world.

I never saw that movie Taking Manhattan, I will look it up. It's not on LD. It didn't get a good rating on german movie site. Is this a martial arts movie or just a shoot 'em up flick like John Woo movies? https://ssl.ofdb.de/film/19396,Taking-ManhattanRighting wrongs is another cool Cynthia Rothrock flick What is wrong with this edition? http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/35854/TSV ... DEFECTIVE+You never stalked Jackie Chan like a groupie when you saw him in your neighborhood? You never spoke to him on the street? I bet he's a very nice person

I bet he's a very nice person He was too far away but my friend saw him in a local restaurant another time and got an autograph. I don't agree Hong Kong movies are often "so bad they're good", often they're so good it's ridiculous on their tiny budgets and so creative and unpredictable at times. Plus unbeatable characters, action and shootouts. Nothing like them. Love anything with Cynthia Rothrock in it, or that other whitey, my fellow Australian Richard Norton. Taking Manhattan isn't really a martial arts movie although there is some in it, it's more of a gritty action movie. It's definately not a John Woo style shoot em up. I'm surprised there's no Hong Kong LD of it. I actually prefer DVD for Hong Kong stuff now that Fortune Star/Joy Sales puts out some decent editions of old stuff. The subtitles get cleaned up vs the LD with the original theatrical subs that are often hard to decipher. Exception would be John Woo stuff where it's so kinetic I don't want to risk digital macro blocking.
