Who else is noticing this phenomena, it seems that all of our favorite films on LD that have never been released on DVD
are now turning up on Bluray.

I for one don't care about Bluray but am starting to lose my interest in collecting LDs now that its cheaper to buy it
again and shipping is sometimes free, the LD you have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

I'm still going to keep the LD dream alive in my house for now and will cut down on the collection. But how do others feel about this.

I have mentioned this a number of times in the past 2 years but a lot of folks here have an iron barrier against Blu-rays. A lot of the obscure horror and sci-fi which are never less than $30 on LD are/have been on Blu-ray for $5-20. A lot of times, BD has the correct aspect ratio, much better video. I only buy LD if the title only exist in LD.

I have noticed this and it makes sense since no point re-issuing a re-issue of a DVD.
Why not give people something that hasn't seen the light of day in a long time.

Great if you're a movie fan but rubbish if you like music like me.

I will still keep buying Laserdiscs, even if they are available on DVD of Bluray.... (I'll buy those too :P )

I guess I don't understand the question, if there is one. If there is a BR of something I like, I buy it. I'm sure as hell not going to avoid it.

I'll keep the LD around because...I never sell anything. :)

DVD...what is DVD again?

Terror in the Aisles - on Japanese Laserdisc under the title "That's Shock!" No DVD, but released as an extra on the Universal Halloween II release

That's the only one I can name off the top of my head.

I own both.

If the rumours are true, Star Wars original trilogy theatrical cut is now potentially seeing a Blu-ray release, which would (assuming it's a remaster) displace LaserDiscs as having (as far as I can tell) the most definitive theatrical cut available. http://www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-thea ... ase-again/

The theatrical cuts were released on DVD in the mid 00's. But they were just the same transfers as the THX Laserdiscs slapped on DVD.

So if they're just going to re-release the same old 20+ year old transfers, this news is nothing special.

True, but I suspect Disney are more likely to want to do it well than George Lucas, given his position towards the cut. IIRC the problem with the DVD transfers is that they were not the original aspect ratio — does this issue affect all the LD editions too, or not?

As far as I can remember, the LE DVDs of the theatrical cuts were the original 2.35:1 AR. Of course, I don't own them (I did buy them for a friend for her B-day), but if they were the same transfers as the LDs, they should still be 2.35:1.

I've read nothing that the aspect ratios were fiddled with, unless they lopped off the sides to fit a 1.78:1 picture on most TVs, but then again, it's non-anamorphic, so that's kind of defeating the point of having that AR.

Well I think TITANIC went from LD VHS to DVD around the same time in late 1990's? The re-issue digital cinema 2/3d version went to bluray and I don't think it was re-issued on DVD.

Ah, apologies, I was wrong. Ah well, DVD and Laserdisc obviously tie, then, at having the definitive release of Star Wars right now. My point is, that might change soon if the rumours are true!

Good day rein-o,

Good to read your posts as always,

For myself personally Laserdisc will always be regardless of what new format comes along, as I have always been excited about the whole Laserdisc experience, and the fact that I have invested much time and effort into obtaining each movie title and hardware to go along with it was a conscious choice knowing full well that I would keep.

Their are so many main a subtle reasons why I am fond of this format, and this will always stay with me.

ULTRA 4K Blu-Ray is close at hand now and roll on CES JAN 2016, but this will not take away the limelight shine that I have for Laserdisc, but will only enhance it.

Kindest Regards

:D

I feel that this is another nail in the coffin for the laserdisc format, but at the same time it opens a new door for the blu-ray format.
Many good distributors are filling the blu-ray releases with extra material and puts a lot of effort into their releases. I like the blu-ray format and has nothing against it and the money spent on "rare" laserdiscs not available in any other format, will still be a part of my collection even if I decide to upgrade in the future.

I was looking at "split seconds" on LD. Its a early 90s cheap monsters sci-fi with Rutger Hauer. LD is $20 ish and P&S unless you can find the HK version. It appears it skipped a DVD release in the US but it's available in Europe in multiple markets. Then I realized it's got a Blu-ray release in Germany in original aspect ratio for like €12. Then I realized it's also available on Hulu plus in HD(720p).

The Guardian - Another release is coming up on Blu-ray in a few months. It has been available on dvd as well as video tape, but the dvd goes for high prices if you want it brand new. It is out of print, at least from what I have read. Got it on laserdisc, I really enjoyed this horror movie so I will pre-order it on Blu-ray.

Shoutcast factory is good with pricing. It will eventually see $12.99.
