Correct - the Director's Cut was completed in SD Video. They "could" recreate the Directors Cut in HD, but they would have to start over. This is the same reason why DS9 and VOY haven't been issued on BD. While both were shot on film, all of the effects were done in SD. What they did for TNG was so costly, they are hard pressed to recoup their investment in giving DS9 and VOY the same treatment.

Well that's not quite correct - TNG was shot entirely on film, but all the special effect elements were combined and edited on video only. I think the only major effect they had to do over was the crystalline entity, so for the most part all they had to do was recombine the various elements in addition to the usual cleanup job. DS9 and especially Voyager suffer from the bigger issue of dropping models entirely in favour of CGI during their run and unless those elements were rendered in HD in the first place, they would have to do all of them over and that would most certainly be expensive - and certainly not worth the effort for shows that are nowhere as popular as TNG.

Star Trek I is a plodding sci fi phenomenon up there with Odin. I have to get this extra long version of a great long, "boring" film. Watching flicks like this relaxes me. I watch 2001 pretty often. The polar opposite of modern life and modern movies. f**k the present.

The Motion Picture is my favourite Star Trek movie.

It could be something I like more but really its just going through the motions pretending to be 2001 or Solaris or whatever. It has the trappings of the real ish but not the meat of it.

I'm only hard on it because its Star Trek which is, net, the greatest scifi thing there is. There are places ST could never go (2001, Solaris, Bladerunner, Angel's Egg, Slaughterhouse 5, 12 Monkeys, A Boy and His Dog) but in its main work, which is promoting an optimistic vision of a better future more engaged in its destiny, no one else can compare. So that's I rag on the little things. I'd still way rather watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture than see probably anything scifi released this year.

I have similar thoughts about Gundam, which I think is ST's only competition in this area. I dunk on Wing or Seed not because they are bad anime exactly but because they are waste of Gundam.

I believe I posted somewhere else but can't remember.

Enter the Dragon (1973) [12809]
While this film is shorter its the only way to get the theatrical release widescreen without the extra scenes in the beginning and end.

I think I had that convo with you. I distinctly remember that when the movie was first released on DVD, it was also the first time they'd restored the cut scenes, so any home video release predating that would be using the old theatrical cut.

Funny thing is, those cut scenes did wind up in in a different movie; Tower of Death aka. Game of Death II where they were dubbed over with new dialogue!

Yes, I started a topic asking about it, or it was an old topic that I asked???
It was hard for me to track down a cheap copy. What really got me is that I bought it new and sold it when I picked up the Japanese LD box.
But now I'm focusing on films I like that are in this category, either theatrical release only on LD or uncut on LD all else is being sold off.

Unless there's a shot or scene from this shortened version that isn't available on a DVD/Blu-ray release, this version wouldn't necessarily count.

Could you post a link on where you had this conversation about it?

For Star Trek this is only available on the LD, possibly a VHS but never released on DVD as of yet, I doubt it will ever be released.
