Here is a comparison to all three releases of Christmas Story (excluding VHS as we know it stinks) now that the Blu-Ray has been released. I know it's hard to admit that DVD and BD are better but I think when it comes to quality you have to admit it, results don't lie. But I still like LD, not bashing it at all and don't plan on selling out, I'll always have a place for LD's on my basement shelf. As a disclaimer keep in mind that this one comparison doesn't represent the quality of all LD's compared to DVD or BD. I don't see a way to post pics here so I'll provide the link. Let me know what you think. http://www.20thanniversarymac.com/christmas-story.htm |

The Blu-ray definitely looks best. It also shows more frame image at top. |

Nice screen grabs, I think that they provide a reasonable set of comparisons. However in terms of DVD vs LD I've always felt one of its advantages was in capturing movement. I've seen DVD struggle with action scenes and/or a handheld camera. For example I actually prefer watching Saving Private Ryan on LD due to the action scenes. |

That is a great comparison and I'd definitely agree with you on this occasion the Blu-ray disc is the clear winner. Really it would be a poor show if it wasn't given the 28 years it took to develop the blu-ray format since laserdisc was first released. In fact when you think of what else has changed over that time frame laserdisc actually holds up pretty good, all things considered. Some of the recent music concerts I've bought on Blu-ray are stunning however I've never got too excited about DVD as a format. |

jjhunsecker wrote: The Blu-ray definitely looks best. It also shows more frame image at top. As you pointed out here, I noticed and will check back on the LD, because it appears they did not master the entire frame in the LD. It appears they cropped the left and bottom of the frame. In the DVD and BD they restored the entire frame image or at least added more of the original frame, possibly around 5% more frame. Notice the picture hanging on the top left is missing and the bottom is also missing some area on the LD. I'll have to throw the LD in again and confirm but I'm pretty certain this is the case. I think with LD vs DVD the major difference is color and minor improvement in detail. The DVD is more vibrant. And of course the BD is better in all respects. With audio in this title at least, it's not a major improvement in 2 channel mono, mono in center channel is much improved as it didn't exist before and is much louder at the same volume level. I'll do another title when I get the chance and post a new thread. It's kind of fun doing the comparisons, and interesting to see each format's results. LD was definitely ahead of its time from 1978-1996, and I think they make nice collectables with a pristine cover and a rare title, plus seeing that puzzled look on someone who never heard of Laserdisc. |
