If I'd known I was going to be buying actual movies - especially ones in CAV format - I probably would've invested into a player with both sides play instead.

This wasn't even my first choice for Star Wars on LD - I would've been perfectly happy with the American Widescreen Collection releases, shrinking aspect ratio and all - but when I saw these three on ebay at very low starting price (I ended up winning them for about 25 dollars a pop or less), I figured, why the hell not.

The seller also had these for sale which I bought entirely out of curiosity; I only bid about five dollars for each and won by being the only bidder.

On hindsight, I kinda wish I'd bought those F1 GP titles instead. I can probably just put these up on the marketplace for sale if they don't turn out to be anything particularly interesting, but the GP ones at least might've had some domestic interest.

Fascinating! I was all proud of myself for working out the Japanese on those before I noticed the French down at the bottom and was like, "Oh...yeah...Louvre Museum I and II..." LOL!

I'm curious what exactly these are though. Gallery tours? Still-frames of the different artworks that you can step through? I've seen similar collections on CD-ROM, but never on LD.

I was hoping that'd be the case, but then I saw VHS releases with the same cover art on yahoo auction JP and determined that's probably not the case. They're single-side CLV discs with an animated slideshow, each showing about 60 paintings in total. Because it is actual video and not just a frame-by-frame slideshow, it gets a classical music accompaniment. The only bits of live action footage are some external shots of the museum when the music changes.

The LD (and VHS) releases:

Museums of the World: Louvre Beauty 1 [ICLB-1103]
Museums of the World: Louvre Beauty 2 [ICLB-1104]

... were the NTSC down-conversion of the original HD (Hi-Vision) masters:

Musée du Louvre 1 [ICHL-0001]
Musée du Louvre 2 [ICHL-0002]

So clearly I can't be still-frame since Hi-Vision (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't do still-frame like standard LD CAV discs.

Don't get too jealous, but who's got two thumbs and added this bad boy to his LD library:

Bryan Adams: Waking Up the Neighbours - Videos (1992) [440 089 515-1]?

This guy! :D

Picked up The Hunt for Red October, Apollo 13, Schindler's List, The Deer Hunter, and Braveheart from the holdout video rental place in my town. (No clue how he stays open.)

Julien

I think it does, just not very well - on scenes with a lot of motion. The Techmoan video about it shows a lot of what looks like dot crawl when played back in slow motion during panning shots, while scenes with no movement look excellent. I would imagine that on a title like these with next to no motion at all, you'd probably get quite decent looking freeze frames.

Probably just keeps it open as a hobby.

Iron Maiden: The First Ten Years
Intersection
Gamma Ray: Lust For Live - without OBI, though.
Michael Schenker Group (M.S.G): Unplugged Live

Been some time where I haven't updated the collection at LDDB, so I might have some titles lying around that are not in my list.

Expensive hobby. I can't imagine the storefront rent is cheap. It's also conceivable there's a big enough market of older and poorer folks downtown who don't have a regular Internet connection at home but who do have a DVD player.

ertoili, I just ordered that very same Patlabor OVA laserdisc from Japan yesterday... It's fascinating how this media took off in Eastern Asia much more than in Europe, like imageboards!
