Post subject:  Pioneer DVL-919 US with 240V PS vs CLD-D925 ?

Hi,

I currently use a Pioneer CLD-2950 to play my PAL and NTSC LDs.
I recently acquired a Pioneer DVL-919 (USA version) in which I put the European 240V power supply (it now works both in 110/240 V).
Right now I kept it for backup purposes should my 2950 fail.
I would prefer a Pioneer CLD-D925 instead of the DVL-919 for PAL compatibility although most of my LDs are NTSC.
The question is, if I only consider the NTSC, is the CLD-D925 preferable for its picture quality, or would the DVL-919 give equal quality (or really almost the same) ?

Thanks for your infos.

If you are mostly into NTSC, the CLD-D925 is a bad choice.
While some folks consider it to be the best PAL player ever,
it is mediocre for NTSC playback at best, if not even less than that.

Try to search around the forum for the best players list, it was compiled by substance.
That will give you a hint what you should look for.

Ok so better keeping the 919 as backup even though it doesn't play PAL discs (anyway, I was told that Japanese discs have much less rot).
I don't really know what benefit I can get out of PAL versus NTSC except maybe for the duration due to the frame rate.

I have a CLD-D925 PAL/NTSC player as well so since I almost entirely watch NTSC movies out of my 200 laserdisc collection I was wondering which NTSC-only player with AC-3 output to look for, considering image and audio quality.

Hi david.winter,

You have also asked your question on laserdiscplaza.fr, but I answer here.

I think you'd rather get an US or Japanese high end player with a step down transformer to watch only NTSC discs.

You probably know it, but I nevertheless point the fact that both the CLD-2950 and CLD-D925 are objectively one or two orders of magnitude less of performers compared to high end NTSC only players as it has been revealed by measurements : http://notonbluray.com/blog/cld-2950-laserdisc-review/
