Post subject:  LD/DVD/BD Comparison of Robin Hood Prince of Theives UPDATED

I originally took the LD frames with a CLD-980. It's a low end, early 90's player. I've updated the LD shots with a Pioneer Elite DVL-90. I've also used both composite and svideo in all but frame 3 and I left in the old 980's shots for comparison, as well as composite vs svideo on the DVL-90 (the CLD-980 doesn't have svideo). I believe composite has better results here, but that may have something to do with my pci card (or perhaps composite has better output when not using a TV with comb filter? ... not sure.)

*Disclaimer: this comparison does not represent all LD releases when compared to later DVD or Blu-ray releases and what is determined as better isn't defined as improved quality.

For future comparisons I'll just be using the DVL-90 with composite (unless you think the svideo is better?)

What LD player did you use?

I would like to see a comparison of Highway to Hell :)

Using a CLD-980. Low end model early 90's. I'm looking at upgrading soon, something with dual sided play digital audio output. A mid to high end model LD player would probably be better for comparisons, so once I get one I'll redo the LD screen shots. Maybe they'll improve a bit.

Some other tidbits: For LD, also using composite to my pci capture card at 640x480 29.77 fps MPEG 4 encoding. Unfortunately no H.264 on my older card, but capturing with no compression anyway. DVD and BD are of course digital to digital with H.264 encoding at 1500 and 3000 kbps respectively.

The Blu-ray still frames look amazing! So clear and sharp. The laserdisc images make me feel like I'm peering through a layer of gauze.

By the way, I love these comparisons. Keep them coming!

Keep in mind I'm limited to what the my cheap 30.00 dollar LD player can output right now for the LD frames. Wish I had a better one. I think I can get the LD results a tad better with a 3D comb filter or 2d 3 line filter in one of the Elite models. Should get it closer to DVD.

Wonder if the LD screenshots would look any better with a CAV disc? Either way thanks for the comparisons. Although the still frames are great for comparing level of detail it's tough to get a good idea of the "film-like" appearance many of us enjoy without seeing them in motion. It's actually shocking how much more detail is noticeable with blu-ray.

Once I get a Blu-ray it's hard to watch on DVD or LD if I have them too. Probably not any better with CAV, me thinks an Elite would bring the most improvement, but I'm betting if I don't have the Muse or the other top models it'll still be noticeably shy of DVD. Then again, an Elite isn't your average player. Not exactly typical results. When you take an image of Blu-ray it's like a photo, even on the older films. Hard to imagine what 2160p would bring.

Updated the LD shots with a Pioneer Elite DVL-90. Also did both composite and svideo for comparisons on this player. Composite appears to be better but that may just be when connected to pci card.

Are you playing these into a video capture card and then finding the appropriate frame in the captured video stream, or trying to freeze-frame on the LaserDisc?

For LD, using svideo/composite into video pci card for captured movie file, then taking a still image with captured movie on pause in VLC. I haven't tried freeze frame on LD, I'd imagine it would look bad, jittery.

The main problem is that unless the movie is CAV, you are only getting a Field memory when you freeze-frame. Unless you have an industrial player will two-field memory (LD-V8000 I think does)
