Still spinning, well, it's more like "once again spinning..." as about a month ago I finally picked up a couple replacement players & am again enjoying spinning!

Couple questions...
Researching here, I saw that my Pioneer DVL-700 player may not be a good choice as someone suggested in a post that it makes compromises in PQ for both LD and DVD output. How bad?

Next, something I might be able to do better... I saw a DVDO Edge for sale & started looking into possibly buying it when I found that my Yamaha RX-Z7 uses the same ABT2010 chip. I've always had my player(s) set up via s-video connection, but if I read things right, I should use the yellow composite instead?

TIA!

Yes, nowadays you need to run Yellow as its a better image raw to use the scaler for better filtering etc.

I've heard fine things about the 700, as for DVD why bother with any of these players to use DVD. A 25 dollar DVD player will be better than ANYTHING inside any LD player.

But since you had LD before you know what the image should look like, try running the video straight and if you feel you need to tweek or have more money
to spend on the hobby then go for the scaler.

Still spinning (and buying) discs. I watch one or two per week depending on how much time I have.

Very happy to read these posts, keeps my faith in collectors of LDs who actually watch them on screens as well as on their shelves.

Hi All,

Just joined today and still buying discs. I have owned my CLD-D925 since 96 as well as all my discs. Today my player died with a no disc error, I think it maybe the laser or the spindle motor has gone on it as it doesn't spin anymore. Luckily thanks to this forum I found someone in the UK that maybe fix it for me.....

File comment: was just getting ready to enjoy my movies when I got an error of no disc on my player, bummer.

Totally dead or still turning on?

If the player absolutely has no power, probably more like a power supply issue. That would be a good thing as laser pick-ups and spindle motors are parts that are hard to find depending on the age of the player.

Also try CDs, if it spins them then there is something else at hand.
Good luck getting it back up and running.

I still watch Laserdiscs regularly. There's something about the experience that makes it my preferred way to watch older movies. You can't replace busting out the big sleeve with the nice art work all over it, sliding out the massive disc and plopping it in the massive tray that pops out of your player. The spin up, the side change, the sound of the laser mechanism moving back to underneath the disc to its resting spot when its done.. I dunno, all that beats the pants off of clicking a file on my computer, to me anyway.
Older movies to me don't benefit from high def remasters, I like viewing them in the original version whenever possible. I use an HD CRT to complete the setup (Widescreen for the movies of course), and to me this looks fantastic.

I don’t at all. It’s way too painful to go from 4k to 0.42K.

That's very sad, so even with all the lumagen etc its still painful?

Just a matter of personal opinion really ;)

I'm not a big fan of watching old movies in 4k, even 1080p. Something about being able to see how the props and everything were made makes it harder for me to get into the movie. New movies are obviously designed with high resolutions in mind but older movies brought into High definition can make the movie look cheesy to me.

"I don’t at all."..... really?

Even if LD is the only format that it is on?

I get the 4K thing & if availabile on that it is a no brainer in most cases but never spinning any LDs ever now, I can't see me never using my discs & players in the future.

I may not spin-up features as often as I used to but many of my discs are spun to check out something or other or just to enjoy the whole laserdisc thing, a bit sad perhaps but hey-ho - I am happy.

I don't think I ever see a time that I will stop spinning most of my big discs at sometime or another, I would pass them on if that ever happened but that is highly unlikely anytime soon.

I really would miss the LDs & players.

Long live the "dead" format.

Cheers to all  .

I tend to think of what Techmoan said in one of this videos, I forget which one; that a good movie is still a good movie, even if it's a bit soft around the edges.

No magic even with the lumagen and x0. I am getting the entirety of the .42k resolution of LD but still doesn’t compare to neither 2K or 4K BD.

Most of all the obscure titles I know have been released on BD thanks to shout factory and kino in the last 3 years. There is only a handful left that are LD exclusives.

I sank in so much money into my LD gear and discs. I will never sell them nor I need to. However I anticipate less than 20 hrs of viewing per year.

I have something like 160 UHD discs already. The selection is amazing. There is a little bit of everything. I have something like 2500 Blu-ray discs. Most of them look great! I can find any titles I want including obscure and cheesy ones on BD for well under $15. I can’t find any of these same titles under $30 on LD.

I can see the nostalgia behind this but other than that there is very little reason to collect or watch LDs in 2018.

I disagree on older films on LD. Matter of fact older films look phenomenal on BD and UHD. The film grain, wide color gamut, and detail are amazing.

Well this is nice to know before anymore people sink more money into the Lumagen.
Whats the sense to spend that when you can either enjoy LD as it is OR keep LD and invest that few grand into a newer TV and 4K with the movies you want.

And still have a couple grand left over. :P

I have been telling here for years that the multi thousand dollar equipment is for those who wants the last %10-15 improvement squeezed out. Definitely spend most of your budget on the display. Better players offer significant improvements up to CLD-97. The next step up X0 is only mildly improved.

I think the most efficient combination is a Pioneer CLD-97 and a 9th generation Kuro plasma. You can buy both for around $1000.

Thanks, got that.

The "only on LD" line is getting thin on the ground with films now & the list of stuff due or in the pipeline is pretty relentless.

The older films thing, got to agree - so much detail & incredible images.

I have quite a few Formula One LDs with race features & footage that only got a release in Japan on VHS & on laserdisc & most will never (never say never?!?) be issued again for a number of reasons. The F1 LDs are played fairly often so I do use the discs that I have.

Got some F1 LDs still to find & I do sometimes pick up the odd laserdisc but not as often as I used to do - I will be around
the LD thing for a while yet though.

Cheers  .

The nice thing is that there is still a lot of great stuff only on LD if you are focusing on stuff like the F1 or Anime or even some of the European films.

But yes, it is getting thinner and thinner to keep adding to ones collection.
