hello
i was wondering the other day what was the number that lds were pressed back in the day.im not talking only about strong box office hits in the pick of ld area but for every ld in the 80's and 90's .
if we consider that lddb hypothetical has 1/1000 of the lds that were sold in its "collection number" and that were made about 58.000 unique ld titles then i got around 10.000 units per title been pressed.please share your thoughts

I think I sort of asked something like this when I first came on the forum.
Even Ty wasn't really able to answer this one, only some discs that are posted in the notes have this info.

Its easier to find out about players.
Sort of like VHS, does anybody really know how many of a title was made??

Really wish there was some way to find out but I don't think we ever will

i think am generous about the 1/1000 of lds thats been sold worldwide been also on collection in lddb (maybe not)
even if i am correct or close 10.000 units per title is very very very low compared to numbers of dvd or blurays and uhd nowdays
when i see titles that are obtained by one two users really makes me wonder
the players thats been sold worldwide are around 17 million
if we concider having 17 million unique laserdisc users and now on lddb are 5000 with 660.000 collection then the 17 million users would have around 2.244.000.000 collection
if we accept that the titles issued are around 58000 then we have around 40000 units per title which is i think crazy optimistic and that would be the very top
so i think the truth is in the middlle and possibly below

My guess is that a “big” movie in the US like Star Trek: Generations would sell around 50,000 units. Smaller titles like Criterions of things you’ve never heard of as low as 1000. Many LDs were flops so many were returned as cutouts and then sold at lower prices if not destroyed. If a title is HUGE like Terminator 2 where it came out something like twenty five times across all regions I’d guess maybe 300,000. If any title sold a million copies it would probably be T2.

None of this is based on data. I’ve never seen any reliable data. It’s all my guesses based on my experiences collecting crap and I’m pretty sure most any numbers you find elsewhere are just as unreliable. If anyone claims to have real numbers I’d want to know where they came from.
