One of the big appeals of laserdiscs - and vinyl records for that matter - is the art and the size of the sleeve provided for it.

That doesn't mean that the 12 square inch space was particularly well used all the time. For example the cover for Event Horizon Event Horizon (1997) [LV334823-WS] is just the poster but badly cropped so the titular ship is barely in the frame, no changes in the art composition whatsoever so it looks crap.

Any other, better (or worse, rather) examples?

I hate anything with a huge banner/bezel/marque on it that pollutes everything that label releases. The most obvious example is Discovision. Everything they made is a cover about %65 dominated with the same Discovision BS as everything else they made with a small section in the middle devoted to the actual movie. “Oh look, *theres* Jaws!”

Always thought these covers were great compared to the later widescreen reissues.

Taxi Driver (1976) [VLD 5920]
Boy and his Dog, A (1975) [I5071]

They made perfect use of the LD size and looked amazing compared to other releases.

On a side note, I think its pretty cool to see the covers re-used from VHS to LD like Highlander (1986) [ID6679HB]

While they could have spent some time making a cool cover it also gives that feel of advertising art that we will never actually have ever again.

You want to see a bad and kind of creepy cover? Take a look at Video Vallenato: vol.1 (1995) [W00002]

Cannon Home Video was bad for this, but I hated it when they'd just use the VHS cover art (or sometimes a portrait poster) and leave the rest of the cover blank or generic.

Highlander (1986) [TLY 90 4017 1]
Highlander (1986) [ID6679HB]
Clockwise (1986) [TLY 90 3956 1]
Wings of Desire (1987) [ID6635OR]

Hi hippiedalek

Yes they were very poor & the UK THORN EMI issues were the same - really shoddy & the transfers were dreadful too.

Most were gatefold covers but inside all you got inside were images for other THORN EMI releases so pretty crappy all round.

Cheers

I think my favourite marque is the mid-80's Warner one with the "false" gradient.

The early Criterion release covers are disappointing. They don't utilize the entire front of the jacket. Just a smaller portion with a single photo and a neutral color background. Usually pretty boring font for the title as well. The got it right with the later releases. Some of them have fantastic covers.

I always thought Criterions Blade Runner Special Edition was crappy. They've used some soft airbrushed version of the original poster art, looks terrible.

Blade Runner: Special Edition #19 (1982) (Uncut) [CC1120L]

Geez, I never even noticed that. Then again, I never looked very closely.

"Hey let's redraw the poster badly so Harrison Ford and Sean Young don't look like themselves anymore!"

I always hated that cover. I took the picture from the Embassy jacket and pasted it over the Criterion "air-brushed" crap image.

I also was not a fan of the "Star Trek III: Search for Spock" LaserDisc jacket - the LP jacket is MUCH cooler.

I think that the vast majority of Hong Kong releases have horrible covers !!! I have seen some really really bad covers from Hong Kong.

One of my "favourites" !!! -> Image

I whole heartedly agree with this. Pretty sure they could have toned it down a bit.

A couple of the Dawn of the Dead LD covers suck . . .

Was going to say this German LD of Lucio Fulci's The New York Ripper, but it's a bootleg, so what can you expect?

Now this one isn't a bad cover, per se:

But when you compare it to the Japanese cover:

I'm still wondering what the hell this is supposed to be.

Also that American cover for Homeward Bound wouldn't be so bad if they'd made some kind of an attempt to make that "letterbox" banner look at least slightly less bland!

I like that cover, and it looks much better if you also have the obi.
I also like the Elite Box Dawn cover design.
Maybe its just an opinion of individual taste after all?

I don’t have any problems at all with that Dawn of the Dead cover. I think it’s probably way better than the movie but I’ve never seen it.

Nah, that cover is pretty bad, its like a partial page from an newspaper article.

The movie is actually one of the best, other than the corny scene with the comedy music when they are cleaning up the mall the movie itself
was done pretty well for a lower budget horror film.

That's satire, baby.

I mean really, the satire in the movie is about as subtle as a pie to the face - and then it actually gives you pies to the face!

Yeah, that's the scene. I even hate the newer films that do that, why can't they keep it serious and not break into comedy.

I guess too much will actually make people cry when they get out of the theater to see real life.
