When I was working in Melbourne a few years back there was a spot in the city with tons of VHS and LD, he closed just before I left. I picked up a big Hong Kong haul out of a guys boot through gumtree and he put me on to an old video shop in Springvale. Went there and there were a couple of old dusty boxes full of LDs under the DVD racks. I grabbed a few good Hong Kong films out of. When I returned a couple of months later it was a cafe. The chain of used record stores in Melbourne, Dixon's I think usually had some LDs on sale, not sure if they still do. The best was the big store out East somewhere, website says Blackburn? Oh s**t looks like there's only two stores now, sure there were more before..

I had the VHS of that in the day, it was one of my prized possessions. It bored the hell out of my friends but I loved it. Have that LD now too.

I remember my early teen self staying up late in the '90s to watch all those '70s and '80s summer camp/teen/frat comedies in the hope of seeing some T&A..

It’s a cutout. Most American ones just used a hole punch.

Zeta is correct, it's cut. I knew when I bought it and it was much cheaper than the marketplace prices here.

I know barcodes were cut on unsold products. Magazines it was very common but I've seen DVD covers like that too.

Is it because it was discounted? I have some LDs like that and some DVDs and manga from when ADV had a sale and the UPC was punched.

Well afaik the way it worked here was the item wasn't meant to be sold after the barcode was cut, the point was to provide proof of no sale but instead of returning the whole thing just the barcode was required. But yeah plenty of places would sell the items at a heavily discounted price instead of binning them.

Never noticed the hole punch thing myself.

It means the movie or album sat in stores or in warehouses unsold until the publishers bought them back. They alter the product so that it doesn’t look new anymore and then they get rid of them at a lower price in a different market, the crap bin as it’s also known.

It has no relationship to the quality of the release, just that they made too many. I’ve gotten some great cutouts over the years.

Cutout cassettes were the most gory. They sawed right through the case and into the cassette in some cases. Sometimes they used just a single drill hole in a harmless place, all the way through the tape. :D

Common practice back in the day with LPs, corner cuts & hole punching of the cover for remaindered stock.

The bit below might help.

Cheers

Remaindered stock or remainders (books-toys+other goods) are goods or items that are no longer selling well and whose remaining unsold copies are liquidated by the publisher or supplier at greatly reduced prices. Usual practice is to mark the stock or goods in a way that renders them unsalable as new stock. Often stamping, hole punching, corner cutting, top cutting, staining and other methods.

I have seen some extreme things with remaindered stock but that is crazy, drill holes through the cassette.

Got a few hole-punched LDs but non so far any with corner cuts.

Cheers
